--- Want to get a head start on your semester? The Student Success Center is now offering free walk-in tutoring in the Commons in Hodges Library and in Hess Hall. For more information, please visit http://studentsuccess.utk.edu/support/tutoring/ or stop by one of our tutoring centers in the Commons or Hess Hall.

--- Interested in starting a business but don’t know how? The Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the College of Business Administration will offer the chance for students, faculty, and the community to learn from entrepreneurs and business experts about the essentials of getting a company off the ground. The Vol Court spring 2012 session begins tomorrow, Jan. 31, and runs through March 13. Workshop presenters are from various organizations throughout Tennessee, and all have experience with entrepreneurial companies. The seven-part series will be held Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. in room 701 of the Stokely Management Center.

--- Novelist/screenwriter Sabina Murray will read at Writers in the Library on Monday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hodges Library Auditorium. Her latest collection of short stories, "Tales of the World," reimagines moments in the lives of explorers from Australian Aborigines to Aztec kings. --- UT's Issues Committee and Central Program Council present "Inside the White House with John P. McConnell," 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31 in the UC Auditorium. McConnell, former speechwriter for President Bush and Vice President Cheney, will recall personal accounts during the Bush administration. As part of the three-person team responsible for the president and vice president's most vital speeches, McConnell's work stretches from the State of the Union Addresses to George W. --- The UT Red Cross Club will meet on Thursday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. in UC room 226 to discuss upcoming events and to introduce Diana Whaley, a registered nurse and the Disaster Health Manager for the American Red Cross. --- The UT Women's Coordinating Council will host comedian Ben Lerman on Thursday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the UC Auditorium. Lerman is a rising star of the New York comedy scene, and in the collegiate setting, Lerman covers tough issues regarding the LGBTIQA community. Lerman's routine, a mixture of stand up and song, prides itself on sending a positive message and pointing out the humor in life, relationships and the world at large. Questions? --- Nourish International meeting, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2 in HSS room 203. The mission of Nourish International is to eradicate poverty by engaging students and empowering communities. Since 2003, Nourish International has sent $212,280 and 281 students abroad, working with community partners on 45 projects from around the world. Last summer, Nourish sent students to Uganda to create major change by helping orphans build their very own sustainable garden. This year, the group is interested in sending students to South America to help.

--- All Campus Theatre presents Edward Albee's "The Lady From Dubuque," directed by Dimi Venkov. Written by one of America's premier dramatists, this biting play explores relationships, death, and the nature of identity. Performances will take place Thursday-Saturday, February 2-4 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Clarence Brown Lab Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and faculty and $8 for general admission.

--- The Association of Chemistry Graduate Students will sponsor a chili lunch on Friday, February 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Buehler room 511. For $5, you will receive two bowls of chili, a bag of chips, and a drink. All proceeds benefit Second Harvest of East Tennessee.


--- UT Science Forum, noon Friday, Feb. 3 in Thompson-Boling Arena Dining room C-D. Speaker: Flora Meilleur, assistant professor of biochemistry at North Carolina State University & ORNL. --- UT's Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the UC. This year students will be able to learn how to lead with integrity, authenticity, confidence, purpose, or any other particular skill, context or attribute for which you have a passion. This year's conference will feature keynote speaker Doc Hendley, founder of Wine to Water, 2009 CNN Hero, and author of Wine to Water: A Bartender's Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World. The conference is free and a t-shirt, lunch, and conference materials will be provided to all conference participants. Dress is business casual. The conference is limited to the first 400 students who register so be sure to sign up soon at http://sold.utk.edu/conference/.

--- Are you looking for a way to get more involved on campus? Are you proud of UT and want to share your love of UT with others? The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is currently accepting applications for the VolCorp Program for the 2012-2013 school year. The VolCorp Program encompasses three student groups – The UT Ambassadors (official campus tour guides), ME4UT (minority recruitment team), and the Volunteer Team (athletic recruiters). All students are paid $7.25 per hour. Come to an information session on either Thursday, Feb. 2 or Monday, Feb. 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the UC Shiloh Room. These sessions are not mandatory but will help to answer any questions. Important Deadlines

--- Are you interested in politics and the legislative system? Would you like to spend 6 weeks of your summer in Washington D.C.? Are you interested in interning for a U.S. congressman? If you answered yes to these questions, then you should apply for the Congressional Internship Program sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of Student Life. The application period ends on February 12, so submit your application as soon as possible. --- UT undergraduates are encouraged to apply for summer research internships. Up to 75 internships at $2,000 each will be awarded to support undergraduate students who work on a research or creative project over the summer with a UT faculty mentor. --- This semester the Power Down Pledge Drive is back! Students can "ink" the pledge tree poster with a thumbprint either today or tomorrow:
- Monday, Jan. 30 at TRECS between 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, Jan 31 at the University Center between 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Signees will be entered into a raffle to win a signed football by Coach Dooley! The pledge is an effort by the UT Office of Sustainability to encourage the campus community to save energy. Small steps taken by individuals such as powering down a computer, unplugging electrical devices when not in use, and turning off lights, can make a big impact toward reducing the campus's overall energy use. Knoxville Connection

--- Girls on the Run of Knoxville is a non-profit, 10-week after-school program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Its mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The non-profit combines training for a 5K running event with healthy living education. Girls on the Run programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community. New coaches training is underway. The program begins February 13. The 5k race will be help April 29.
