Good News

--- Interested in starting a business but don’t know how? The Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the College of Business Administration will offer the chance for students, faculty, and the community to learn from entrepreneurs and business experts about the essentials of getting a company off the ground. The Vol Court spring 2012 session begins January 31 and runs through March 13. Workshop presenters are from various organizations throughout Tennessee, and all have experience with entrepreneurial companies. The seven-part series will be held Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. in room 701 of the Stokely Management Center.

--- A group of UT students and one faculty member will help prepare special events and conduct other behind-the-scenes work at this year's NFL Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, Indiana. TEAM UT, a mix of undergraduate and graduate students, will work directly with the Indianapolis Host Super Bowl XLVI Committee for the February 5 event. This is the sixth year a UT Knoxville team has gone to the Super Bowl.

--- The College Democrats will hold their first meeting of the semester at 7:30 p.m. tonight in HSS room 104. Free pizza and drinks will be served.

--- Interested in anthropology? The Undergraduate Anthropology Association will hold its first meeting of 2012 on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 5:15 p.m. in the LRC in East Stadium Hall. Snacks will be provided.

--- Interested in Mortar Board? Come to the Mortar Board Membership Panel from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, in UC rooms 223-224. Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for achievements in scholarship, leadership and service. --- The American Nuclear Society (ANS), the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) and Women in Nuclear (WIN) will hold an interest meeting on Tuesday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Perkins Hall room 324. ANS will also host recruiters from the Southern Company, which operates three nuclear power plants in Alabama and Georgia. INMM will host Greg Louden, who manages national security programs at Pro2Serve. He is currently at ORNL. Prior to coming to East Tennessee, Louden served as the nuclear planner for the US armed forces in Korea, and formerly trained the military officers who carry the "football," the briefcase containing nuclear weapon launch codes for the US President. This is the perfect meeting to attend if you are interested in working in the nuclear power sector or in nuclear-related national security applications. All majors are welcome. --- The Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization will hold its first general body meeting of 2012 on Tuesday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Haslam room 113. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. This week, the speaker is Matthew Tunstall, an alumnus of the UT College of Communication and Information. He is the founder, CEO and marketing director of Stalltalk, which creates mural advertisements and places them in a myriad of unique locations.

--- Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity will hold interest meetings at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24 and Wednesday, Jan. 25 in AMB room 27. These meetings are for anyone interested in rushing Alpha Kappa Psi. Questions? E-mail [log in to unmask]

--- The Public Relations Student Society of America will hold a resume critique workshop on Tuesday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Communications Building room 251. --- The Society of Human Resource Management (UT SHRM) will hold their kickoff meeting for the spring semester on Thursday, January 26 at 6:00 p.m. in Haslam Business Building room 201. Come to learn about their events for this semester and how you can get involved. This semester the group will host a health care panel, participate in business cases, and much much more. There will be food and door prizes at the meeting.

--- Nourish International meeting, 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 in HSS 205. The mission of Nourish International is to eradicate poverty by engaging students and empowering communities. Nourish International is on 24 campuses across the U.S. Since 2003, Nourish International has sent $212,280 and 281 students abroad, working with community partners on 45 projects from around the world. --- The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences Graduate Student Advisory Board will host the Brrr! Trot 5K on Saturday, Feb. 4 at noon at the Greenway behind Earth Fare in Bearden. --- Interested in becoming a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-health honor society? New members are only initiated once a year, in February, so don't miss your chance. --- All Campus Theatre presents Edward Albee's "The Lady From Dubuque," directed by Dimi Venkov. Written by one of America's premier dramatists, this biting play explores relationships, death, and the nature of identity. Performances will take place Feb. 2-4 at 8:00 p.m. and Feb. 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Clarence Brown Lab Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and faculty and $8 for general admission.

Get Involved

--- Are you looking for a way to get more involved on campus? Are you proud of UT and want to share your love of UT with others? The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is currently accepting applications for the VolCorp Program for the 2012-2013 school year. The VolCorp Program encompasses three student groups – The UT Ambassadors (official campus tour guides), ME4UT (minority recruitment team), and the Volunteer Team (athletic recruiters). All students are paid $7.25 per hour. Come to an information session on either Thursday, Feb. 2 or Monday, Feb. 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the UC Shiloh Room. These sessions are not mandatory but will help to answer any questions. --- Like microbiology? Want a chance to win a free nerd shirt and $20? To formally introduce itself, the new Microbiology Undergraduate Club (MUC) is holding a t-shirt design contest for all students to design their very first t-shirt and get to know the organization. --- UT's Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the UC. This year students will be able to learn how to lead with integrity, authenticity, confidence, purpose, or any other particular skill, context or attribute for which you have a passion. This year's conference will feature keynote speaker Doc Hendley, founder of Wine to Water, 2009 CNN Hero, and author of Wine to Water: A Bartender's Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World. The conference is free and a t-shirt, lunch, and conference materials will be provided to all conference participants. Dress is business casual. The conference is limited to the first 400 students who register so be sure to sign up soon at http://sold.utk.edu/conference/.

--- TN-SCORE (Tennessee Solar Conversion using Outreach, Research, and Education) is excited to offer summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). TN-SCORE is an alternative energy research grant involving nine universities across Tennessee. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation. During the summer, there are competitive opportunities for undergraduates to work in research groups. The summer research experience is an 8-10 week program. Students will receive a $4,000 stipend, housing, and supplies. Depending on the host institution, the stipend may differ and food may be included. Important Deadlines

--- The Chancellor's Office and the Office of Research provide funding for a summer internship program to promote research and creative activity among undergraduate students. All undergraduate students enrolled at the Knoxville campus are eligible to apply. Up to 75 internships at $2,000 each will be awarded to students who work on a research or creative project with a UT Knoxville faculty mentor in the summer of 2012. --- UT's 16th annual Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement will be held Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29 at the UC Ballroom. The event highlights research and creative projects completed by UT students in collaboration with a faculty mentor. Cash awards will be presented in each division. Winners may submit their projects to the Office of Research to be considered for the summer internships. Application forms are due on Friday, Feb. 3. Abstracts are due on Friday, Feb. 24. Ready for the World Events

--- This is Saudi Arabia Week at the International House. Events this week include:

Movie Night, 6:30 p.m. tonight at the I-House, with a screening of the film "Keif Al-Hal." Free popcorn and soft drinks will be provided.

Saudi Arabian Coffee House, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in the I-House Great Room. Learn how to make traditional Saudi Arabian coffee, the traditional welcoming drink served on every truly Arabic occasion such as weddings, receptions, gatherings, meetings, and camel races.

Saudi Arabian Culture Night, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the I-House Great Room. Cultural presentations, live musical and dance performances, a delicious Saudi Arabian meal, and much more. Tickets are on sale for $5 each at the I-House front desk, and are going fast.

Lecture, "The Centrality of Saudi Arabia to American Middle East Interests," 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at the I-House. Speaker: Patrick W. Ryan, who has served in various capacities including Editor-in-Chief of Saudi-US Relations Information Service, President and Founder of Tennessee World Affairs Council, and President of Ryan and Associates.

Knoxville Connection

--- Girls on the Run of Knoxville is a non-profit, 10-week after-school program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Its mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The non-profit combines training for a 5K running event with healthy living education. Girls on the Run programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.

New coaches training starts on Jan. 26. The program begins Feb. 13. The 5k race will be help April 29.
