--- Calling all student artists! The UT Libraries is seeking submissions to the next Student Art in the Library juried exhibition. The exhibition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at UT Knoxville. Cash prizes will be awarded. First prize is $300 and second prize is $150. Selected two-dimensional artworks will remain on display in the Hodges Library throughout the spring semester. For more information, visit www.lib.utk.edu/artinlibrary/.

--- Campus organizations and departments hosting special events or activities for Homecoming 2010 (Nov. 7- 13) are asked to submit information to the Office of Student Activities by Friday, Oct. 15 in order to appear on the official Homecoming Schedule of Events page and publicity.

Good News

--- The Daily Beacon, UT's editorially-independent student newspaper, has launched a new website, utdailybeacon.com. The site features all the Beacon's regular beats--news, student life, sports and arts & entertainment--plus opinions and columns from some of the Beacon's best commentary writers. The site also will highlight the best work from the Beacon's photographers, illustrating campus activities and sports from all across UT. Check it out!

--- Claudia Emerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and the current Poet Laureate of Virginia, will read from her work at Writers in the Library at 7 pm, Monday, Sept. 27, in the Hodges Library auditorium. More at http://www.lib.utk.edu/writersinthelibrary/.

--- Unite for Sight meeting will be held at 6:30 pm, Monday, Sept. 27, in front of Starbucks in Hodges Library. Come and get involved. Whether you are a future optometrist, teacher, or a business major, there is an opportunity awaiting you.

--- Want marketing experience? The UT American Marketing Association is having their first meeting of the semester this at 5:30 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 28, in HBB 201. The chapter is working on two marketing projects: an IMC case competition for Nintendo, and four marketing plans for a nationwide, multi-million dollar business.For more information join the "University of Tennessee American Marketing Association" Facebook group.

--- The UTK College Republicans will be hosting Michael Jones with Young Americans for Freedom at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the UC Shiloh Room. Jones is the Tennessee Young Americans for Freedom Chair and will be informing students about the organization and speaking about current events in the GOP. All students are welcome to attend.

--- The UT Issues Committee is hosting "The Great Porn Debate" featuring Ron Jeremy and Craig Gross at 7:30 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the UC Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. --- Alpha Epsilon Delta is hosting a Mock Interview Workshop with Career Services on Thursday, Sept. 30, in Dunford Hall. This workshop is meant to improve interview skills and make you a stronger applicant. They will give tips and pointers on how to wow at your job, graduate school, medical school or other post-graduate interviews. --- This week's UT Science Forum will be held at noon Friday, Oct. 1, in the Thompson Boling Arena dining area, rooms C&D. Sherrell R. Greene, director of nuclear technology programs, Oak Ridge National Laboratory will speak on "The Five Imperatives of Nuclear Energy." The lecture is free and open to the public.

--- Students are invited to attend the inaugural Anne Mayhew Distinguished Honors Lecture series featuring noted economist James K. Galbraith.  Galbraith currently holds the Lloyd M. Bentsen Chair of Government/Business Relations at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, at the University of Texas at Austin. Galbraith will speak on "The financial crisis and the economy: Where we stand, what we might have learned, and what we can do now." The event will be held at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy.

--- Are you looking for a great way to give back and have fun at the same time?  Dance Marathon is an excellent way.  Sign up for Dance Marathon morale and other committees. Applications and more information can be found at activities.utk.edu/dance-marathon. Applications are due TODAY, Sept. 27.

--- Dance Marathon is currently taking applications for the Morale team. Morale is the group of students who teach and lead the dances at the actual event in Februay. The applications are available online at utkdm.com or in the Teamvols office in the UC. The first practice is next 
Tuesday, Sept. Oct. 4, and the applications are due TODAY, Sept. 27, by 5 pm in the TeamVols office.

Ready for the World Events

--- Come to the Study Abroad Fair from 10 am to 3 pm, Wednesday, Sept. 29, in the UC ballroom. Learn about UT summer, semester and year-long programs, non-UT programs and academic internships. Explore programs, ask questions and talk with UT students who studied abroad. Speak with UT faculty leading summer and mini-term programs and learn about scholarships and how to use financial aid for study abroad programs.

Knoxville Connection

--- The Volunteer Ministry Center, a non-profit agency that reaches out to the poor and homeless of Knoxville, is having its annual 5K race at 9:00 am, Saturday, Oct. 2. The race will begin in World’s Fair Park and continue through the Fort and onto campus. Registration is $25, and you can even register on the day of the race. Events include a 5K Run/Walk, a one-mile walk, and a Kid’s Fun Run. To register for this event, visit http://www.firstgiving.com/vm.

Student Success Center

--- Each semester, the Student Success Center hosts sophoMORE seminars for UT sophomores to hear from and meet people who can significantly shape their college career. This Wednesday, Sept. 29, you can attend a seminar to discover study abroad opportunities, scout out internships and summer jobs and zero in on the perfect major for you. Representatives from the Student Success Center, Career Services, and the Programs Abroad office will be on hand to share options and answer all your questions. This seminar entitled “The Best is Yet to Come!” will be held in the Lindsey Young Auditorium of Hodges Library.
