Senior Librarian
General Statement of Duties: Under general direction, plans, manages,
schedules, and supervises staff of the City of Kingsports Public Library.
Primary responsibilities are collection development, managing the
librarys materials budget and supervising adult services.

Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only)
-Plans, manages, schedules, and supervises staff of the City of
Kingsports Public Library;
-Develops rules and procedures for library usage;
-Receives, researches and responds to requests for information, directs
patrons to appropriate sources/areas and/or provides one on one assistance
to locate specific requested book(s)/material(s).
-Maintains required section records, files and statistics of operational
activities;
-Plans, develops and implements appropriate displays of materials to
reflect interests/events and/or special events;
-Compiles and maintains statistical records of budget spending within
specific categories;
-Takes requests and borrows requested materials from other library systems.
-Evaluates and selects new materials for purchase through review of
professional journals, publisher catalogs, evaluation of patron
suggestions and telephone solicitation by book vendors;
-Evaluates and selects materials to be withdrawn from circulation through
analysis of usage and value based on currency of material and physical
condition.
-Attends a variety of workshops, staff meetings and book selection
meetings;
-Reviews and revises section catalogue of materials;
-Provides assistance to patrons on use of computerized card catalog,
microfiche, microfilm readers and printers;
-Updates catalogue system for additions/deletions of materials.
-Performs managerial duties in absence of department head.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of library cataloguing
including Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure
Author Table and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules; Knowledge of available
resources through statewide interlibrary loan systems; Knowledge of
applicable City of Kingsport policies and regulations; Knowledge of the
policies, procedures, rules and standards of the City of Kingsport
Library; Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science,
cataloguing and classification of materials; Knowledge of the policies and
procedures of the Library Commission; Knowledge of the policies,
procedures and rules of interlibrary loans; Skill in working effectively
in an environment subject to frequent interruptions; Excellent customer
service and communication skills to establish and maintain good working
relationships with other city staff members, other library systems and the
general public; Skill in communicating effectively with a variety of
individuals with varying levels of understanding; Skill in efficiently
operating all library databases, and equipment; Skill in operating a
variety of office equipment including typewriters, telephones, copiers,
microfiche/microfilm readers/printers and adding machines. Good eye for
detail and ability to manage monthly expenditure information and budget
information; Ability to be innovative and enthusiastic.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Masters Degree in Library
Science/Information Science from an ALA accredited program, preferably
with two years experience in public library system. Excellent computer
skills, and flexibility.
ADA REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements: Task involves some physical effort, i.e. some
standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-10 lb.); or minimal
dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop
or office equipment. Task may involve extended periods of time at a
keyboard.
Environmental Requirements: Task is regularly performed without exposure
to adverse environmental conditions.
Sensory Requirements: Task requires visual perception and discrimination.
Task requires oral communications ability.
