Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) --  University of South Dakota -- South
Dakota
 

RESPONSIBILITIES&#58;
Duties of the position include teaching all undergraduate and graduate
levels of sculpture. Areas of specializations may include wood, metal
(welding, foundry and small metals), new media, mold making and history of
sculpture while continuing scholarly&#47;creative research and maintaining
a strong visiting artist program.  Faculty members are expected to make
contributions in teaching, research, and service, and first and foremost
to mentor students in and out of the classroom. This is a 9-month tenure
track position to begin August, 2008.
QUALIFICATIONS&#58;
An earned MFA in sculpture with an established record of teaching and
scholarly&#47;creative exhibition record is required. Three years
University teaching experience preferred, as well as a working knowledge
of current sculpture issues, traditional and new media approaches and a
basic understanding of criticism, theory and history of sculpture.  A
demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student&#47; faculty
population is required.  Rank will be hired at and salary is commensurate
with experience.

DEPARTMENT &#47; UNIVERSITY and COMMUNITY&#58;
Located in southeast South Dakota, The University of South Dakota is the
Flagship Institution for the State of South Dakota (enrollment 8,000). 
The Department of Art is housed in the distinctive Warren M. Lee Center
for the Fine Arts, the designated center for the study of the arts within
the South Dakota system of higher education, organized to provide
comprehensive educational programs, research opportunities, and cultural
service activities to the people of the state and beyond.  The 104,000
square foot Warren M. Lee Center consists of the departments of Music,
Theatre and Visual arts all under one roof.  
The Department of Art, a community of approximately 175 undergraduate
majors, 10-15 graduate students and 9 full-time art faculty, is in a
transitional stage of exceptional student growth and multiple faculty
retirements.  The department is the only visual arts program in South
Dakota to offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (emphasis areas include
ceramics, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture or
art education) and Master of Fine Arts degree (emphasis areas include
painting, printmaking or sculpture) and is part of the only College of
Fine Arts in the State of South Dakota.
The department is the state's only art program accredited by the National
Association of Schools of Art & Design and occupies approximately 32,000
square feet within the Fine Arts Center.  Facilities include 11 studios
throughout the department.
The University Art Galleries reflect the diversity of their mission with
study collections in African, Asian and Native American Northern Plains
art.  The Main Gallery annually features twelve to fifteen art
exhibitions, showcasing contemporary arts and cultural exhibits.  The
Oscar Howe Art Gallery features the largest collection of works by
American Indian artist, Oscar Howe, who served as a longtime faculty
member at USD.   Nationally recognized programs of study and cultural
activities aimed at bridging the public and scholarly art communities
include the annual Frogman's Print and Paper Workshops, a dynamic Visiting
Artist program and the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute for Native American.
 Additional resources include an art history slide library with over 35,000
slides, access to the I. D. Weeks Library, which houses the largest
collection of art resources in South Dakota, including books, art
exhibition catalogs, VHS and digital&#47;electronic media. The Art
