Director, William L. Clements Library -- University of Michigan at Ann
Arbor -- Michigan

Director, William L. Clements LibraryUNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Ann Arbor,
Michigan
The University of Michigan seeks nominations and invites applications for
the position of Director, William L. Clements Library, an internationally
renowned collection for original research on the history of North America
from the pre-Colonial period to the early twentieth century.THE WILLIAM L.
CLEMENTS LIBRARYThe library was founded in 1923 by Michigan industrialist
William L. Clements, a regent and alumnus of the University of Michigan.
He donated the funds for the library's elegant neo-classical building,
located on central campus in Ann Arbor. Clements also donated his
extraordinary Americana collection -- 20,000 rare books, 2,000 volumes of
early newspapers, several hundred maps, and the papers of Lord Shelburne,
the British Prime Minister who negotiated the peace ending the
Revolutionary War. Since then, the collections have grown dramatically,
augmenting the Clements' position as a preeminent source of primary
materials relating to the early history of North America. The director is
an integral part of the University's academic leadership while ensuring
the continued development of the library's rich collections and applying
innovative approaches to teaching, research and scholarly communication
enabled by new information technologies. S/he is responsible for all
aspects of the Clements' support of the University's instruction, research
and service missions. The director of the Clements Library reports to the
Office of the Provost and works closely with the Clements Committee of
Management and Associates groups.THE CANDIDATEThe successful candidate
will be an intellectual leader with a strong background in a discipline
relevant to the Clements' collections, such as American history or
American studies. S/he will have an understanding of the opportunities
presented by libraries of specialized research materials, their nature and
their use; a record of strong institutional and financial management; a
demonstrated capacity for developing and sustaining relationships within
the University and among a wide variety of external constituencies; a
talent and enthusiasm for outreach and fundraising; and a commitment to
supporting a diverse staff. The ability to educate broader communities
about the resources of the Clements and their relevance to current issues
is also critical. Nominations and applications will be reviewed beginning
October 1, 2007, and will be accepted until the position is filled.
Individuals from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. All
inquiries, nominations and applications will be treated in a confidential
manner. Materials and inquiries should be submitted, preferably
