LEADING A NEW HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY
FOUNDING FACULTY FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA
ORLANDO, FLORIDA COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

DIRECTOR, HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY
We are currently seeking applications and nominations for the position of
Director of the Health Sciences Library of the new UCF College of
Medicine. The Health Sciences Library will support the College of Medicine
and its Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, and various health
professions that will be located at the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake
Nona, approximately 20 miles south of the Orlando campus. The Health
Sciences Library is being established as a unit wholly operated within the
College of Medicine, while maintaining a strong cooperative relationship
with the university's larger library system.
The Health Sciences Library is approximately 14,000 square feet and will
be located on the second floor of a new four story College of Medicine
170,000 square foot building at the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake
Nona. The new state-of-the- art library will provide an environment in
support of health care, education and research. The library will include
small and medium group study areas, reading space, computer lab and
training room, an information commons as well as compact shelving,
periodicals, reference and special collections. Other spaces included are
staff offices, support desks, copying and printing areas as well as a
break room. Emphasis will be placed on virtual library services and
resources. Collections will include a wide variety of print and electronic
materials. The electronic collection will be enhanced through state and
national consortium relationships. Students and faculty members will also
be provided with access to the State University Libraries' shared catalog.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As Director, you will have overall authority and responsibility for the
successful start-up, planning, direction, and operation of all
administrative and service functions of the Health Sciences Library.  The
Director reports to the Associate Dean for Planning and Knowledge
Management in the College of Medicine and will maintain a close working
relationship with the Director of UCF Libraries.  Working with the
Director of Educational Support Services in the College of Medicine, you
will have a leadership role in the college's education technology and
knowledge management activities. The college's goal is to develop an
integrated system to identify, create, represent, and distribute explicit
and tacit knowledge for reuse, awareness, and learning across the campus
that meets the needs of the users. You will play a central role in
supporting the academic, research, and clinical enterprises of the UCF
Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona.  
You will be responsible for fostering a team approach to managing the
library; creating an environment that promotes growth, creativity and
motivation among the staff; developing and applying technology tools for
teaching, learning, assessment, and outreach; integrating library training
programs into the health sciences curricula and clinical environment;
directing fiscal and human resource administration of the library;
providing for the strategic use of knowledge resources; developing
partnerships that produce sources of external funding (grants, endowments,
naming opportunities, gifts); building cooperative relationships with the
faculty, College of Medicine administration, biomedical researchers,
University Libraries, university, and the off-campus health sciences
community; and participating in local, state, regional, and national
professional associations. 
STAFF
Initial staffing is budgeted for nine full-time positions including five
librarians and four support staff, with a projected total staffing of 16
FTE by 2012. Three or four of the initial nine positions will be direct
reports. You will be a key participant in the final determination of
staffing requirements.  
QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify for this exceptional opportunity, you must have a Master in
Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program, and at
least seven years experience in an academic health sciences or medical
library, three years of which is at a supervisory level. Your application
will be stronger if you have substantial experience in progressively more
responsible positions in health sciences or medical libraries;
demonstrated leadership in effecting change in a challenging and complex
information and knowledge-rich environment; a management style that is
inclusive and collaborative and that empowers others to excel; current
knowledge and understanding of the changing roles and technologies of
academic health sciences, research, and clinical libraries and ability to
guide their evolution; experience in budgeting, collection development,
and reference&#47;instructional services; successful experience in
identifying, writing, and securing funding or grant opportunities;
knowledge of current trends in medical education; knowledge of collections
and technical services; experience with strategic planning; demonstrated
ability to work well with a diverse employee and user community and to
work within a collegial environment; strong analytical and decision-making
skills; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of on- and
off-campus constituencies; ability to network effectively with
professional colleagues and work in consortia; and documented
accomplishments in research, scholarship, service, and outreach.
You will be a full-time, non-tenure track faculty member. We offer
