University Consortium -- California
 


WESTERN AMERICANA MANUSCRIPTS LIBRARIAN
LIBRARIES OF THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES

Position summary&#58; Under the supervision of the Assistant Director and
Head of Special Collections, the Western Americana Manuscripts Librarian
is responsible for providing access to non-book materials in the
Libraries' Western Americana collections housed in Honnold&#47;Mudd
Library Special Collections and Denison Library. These materials include
but are not limited to photographs, manuscripts, maps, reports, diaries,
letters, and ephemera. 
Position type and compensation&#58; This is an exempt, full-time (40.0
hours per week), 12-month position in Honnold&#47;Mudd Special Collections
and in Denison Library. May require some evening and weekend hours. The
position reports to the Assistant Director & Head of Special Collections.
Minimum salary is $ 3,367.75 per month. The Claremont University
Consortium provides an attractive benefits package.
Essential functions&#58;
&middot;  Processes collections using nationally accepted uniform
arrangement and description standards, such as DACS, MARC21, and Dublin
Core. 
&middot;  Prepares and maintains user centered access tools for non-book
materials including finding aids, MARC records, and EAD. 
&middot;  Serves as Libraries of the Claremont Colleges liaison to the
Online Archive of California (OAC).
&middot;  Works with faculty to assist with collection development,
digital projects, and other initiatives relating to our Western Americana
collections. 
&middot;  Responsible for Western Americana collection development as
manager of the John Kemble Western Americana endowment. 
&middot;  Works with staff in special collections to assess the
preservation and conservation needs of collections.
&middot;  In consultation with special collections staff, selects Western
Americana to be prepared for digitization; works closely with the Special
Collections Digital Projects Coordinator and CCDL staff on carrying out
our digital projects. 
&middot;  Identifies funding sources and prepares grant applications as
needed, including researching, compiling required data, and writing grant
materials. 
&middot;  Provides reference assistance to users of special collections,
including staffing the Reading Room desk, responding to email and chat
reference inquiries, and providing other forms of research assistance as
needed. Serves as resource for inquiries concerning non-book collections. 
&middot;  Prepares exhibitions of Western Americana collections.  
&middot;  Plans, directs, and reviews the work of regular and student
staff.
&middot;  Participates in libraries' planning through service on teams and
other groups. 
&middot;  Performs related duties and participates in special projects as
assigned. 
Knowledge, skills, and abilities&#58;
&middot;  Knowledge of and experience in special collections or archives
in archival processing and finding aid preparation using software tools. 
&middot;  Knowledge of current academic research trends in Western
American history.
&middot;  Knowledge of history of photography.
&middot;  Knowledge of and interest in current developments in archival
processing, digital information technologies and their uses in special
collections. 
&middot;  Understanding of the role of libraries and scholarly
communication in an academic environment.
&middot;  Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, such as the
Archivist's Toolkit, quickly and effectively. 
&middot;  Working knowledge of current national cataloging and processing
standards.
&middot;  Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. 
&middot;  Excellent project planning skills and proven ability to
supervise work of others. 
&middot;  Ability to work effectively as a team member in a dynamic and
rapidly changing environment.
Requirements&#58;
&middot;  Graduate degree from a program accredited by ALA or an
equivalent graduate library science&#47;information studies degree.
Academic background in the humanities. 
&middot;  At least two years of recent professional library experience
working with special collections and non book materials.  
&middot;  Experience identifying a wide variety of visual resources;
familiarity with historic ephemera.  
&middot;  Formal training in archival theory and practice; experience
processing non-book materials; experience preparing related finding aids. 
&middot;  Experience with standard computer office applications such as
Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity
software.
Desirable&#58;
&middot;  Knowledge of basic preservation and conservation standards and
methods. 
&middot;  Familiarity with scanning practices and other best practices for
Digital Libraries. 
&middot;  Experience with CONTENTdm
&middot;  Advanced degree in western American history or literature.
