Job Announcement&#58; - Associate Director

The Galter Health Sciences Library at the Feinberg School of Medicine,
Northwestern University, is re-opening a search to seek an experienced and
skilled individual for its Associate Director position.  Primary
responsibilities include assisting the director in realizing the vision
for the library, strategic planning, and executing the day-to-day
operation of the library.  A chief activity of the Associate Director is
personnel management and staff development.  In collaboration with the
Director, the Associate Director determines and interprets library
policies, evaluates existing programs and develops new programs, sets
library goals and objectives, assists with budget decisions, and prepares
annual and other administrative reports.
Required qualifications for this position include&#58; a Master's degree
in Library&#47;Information Science from an American Library Association -
accredited program; and approximately 6-10 years experience with
increasing levels of responsibility and supervision of professional and
paraprofessional staff.  Preferred qualifications include&#58; experience
working with health sciences faculty and&#47;or user groups; Academy of
Health Information Professionals membership; experience and&#47;or
familiarity with the grant writing process and related grants management;
experience and&#47;or familiarity with technical services operations and
standards; experience and&#47;or familiarity with collection development
or the literature of the health sciences, biomedicine, life sciences or
science and technology; knowledge of academic medical center operations
and their emerging trends; and documented history of professional service,
publication and&#47;or research.  Applicants should also have the following
performance skills&#58; excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
effective management, leadership and organizational skills; ability to
work well under pressure; evidence of initiative and flexibility; ability
to work effectively in a changing environment; ability to evaluate and
assess library programs, services, and policies; ability to develop and
execute a marketing plan; strong computer skills, including experience in
using productivity tools, integrated library systems, the Internet and the
Web; and commitment to personal continuing education and involvement in the
profession.

Environment&#58;  The work environment at Northwestern is exceptional. 
The Galter Library was renovated ten years ago and has been changing ever
since with the goal of providing a pleasant and technologically
sophisticated work environment for library staff and users.  The library
infrastructure includes at least one and sometimes two networked data
ports at each staff position.  Over two hundred network ports are
available in user spaces as well as wireless connections in most study
areas.  The library seats over 400 users in a variety of arrangements
including&#58; 10 group study rooms, a 25-station temporary classroom
along with a 8-station mini-classroom for online instruction, and a
50-seat Learning Resources Center.  The collection includes over 7,000
e-journals; nearly 600 e-books; 135,000 monograph titles; over 280,000
volumes; and assorted models, tapes and other instructional media.  The
Galter Library staff includes 32 FTE organized in a traditional reporting
structure

library participates in several consortia such as the Greater Midwest
Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and the Committee
on Institutional Cooperation for shared resources and program and staff
development.
The Feinberg School of Medicine is an outstanding, highly-ranked,
research-intensive medical school.  Located between the Lake Michigan
shore and Chicago's &quot;Magnificent Mile&quot; (Northwestern
University's Chicago Campus), the Feinberg School of Medicine continues to
expand its research and educational facilities.  The recently opened Lurie
Medical Research Center houses the latest design in research laboratories
as well as provides for outstanding educational space for students,

Salary&#58; The minimum salary for this position is $85,000.
