Subject: Charles W. (Bill) Gear

Charles W. (Bill) Gear, a prominent computer scientist particularly
known for his work in numerical analysis, died in Princeton, New
Jersey on March 15 at the age of 87.

Born to working-class parents in London, Bill studied at Cambridge
University on a full scholarship. Upon graduation in 1956, he headed
to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to learn about
computers, still in the early stages of development. Initially
intending to stay only for a year, he remained to earn a mathematics
Ph.D. in 1960. Upon completing his degree, he went to work at IBM
British Laboratories in Hursley. Two years later, Bill returned to
the University of Illinois, where he rose through the faculty ranks
from Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics
to Full Professor in 1969 and, in 1985, Head of the Computer Science
Department. In 1990 he was named Vice President of the Computer
Science Research Division at the nascent NEC Research Institute in
Princeton, New Jersey. There, he established its computer division,
and two years later became President of the Institute, which also
supported physics research. After retiring in 2000, Bill soon became
a part-time senior scientist at Princeton University, where he
continued research work in collaboration with Yannis Kevrekidis.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering since 1991, Bill was
elected five years later to Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and
Sciences. In 1987 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal
Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Also a Fellow of the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, in 1987-88 he served as
President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Among his many accomplishments, Bill's work on the numerical solution
of stiff ODEs and DAEs, together with his pioneering automatic
software DIFSUB, was widely impactful in science, engineering, and
computational applied mathematics.

In the SIAM community, Bill was widely known and highly respected not
only for his research contributions, but for his excellent judgment
and willingness and ability to see all sides of an argument, and for
his love of a good party! We honor his career and his life.

Subject: GALAHAD 4.0, nonlinear optimization

We are delighted to announce the release of version 4 of the
open-source GALAHAD Fortran software library for solving nonlinear
optimization problems. A defining feature of this new release are
native interfaces to C and Matlab. The library contains software for
linear and quadratic programming, unconstrained, bound-constrained and
general-constrained optimization, nonlinear least squares, and
approximate global optimization, as well as a large variety of
auxiliary methods for linear and nonlinear sub-problem solution. Full
documentation and installation scripts for Linux, Mac and MinGW are
provided, and a variety of compilers are supported. The software is
available under the LGPL 3.0 licence.

Special Session on Large-scale Models: Numerical Methods, Parallel
Computations and Applications will be organized during the 10th
International Conference on Numerical Methods and applications
(NMA'22). The conference will take place in Borovets (a very nice
resort place about 60 km from Sofia, Bulgaria) in the period August 22
to August 26, 2022 (see details:
http://www.math.bas.bg/~nummeth/nma22/index.html ). Proceedings will
be published in the distinguish Springer Series: Lecture Notes in
Computer Science. Extended papers from this session will probably be
published (as was done in the previous conferences) in an
international journal with high index.

Important deadlines:
Deadline for submission of abstracts: January 15, 2019
Notification of acceptance of the talks: January 31, 2019
Deadline for registration: February 15, 2019
Deadline for submission of full papers: March 1, 2019

An online registration will be opened.

Subject: Postdoc Position, OT&ML for Inverse Problems, TU Eindhoven

TITLE: Optimal Transport & Machine Learning for Inverse Problems
DURATION: 2 years

We are looking for a postdoctoral who will join the research group on
Data-Driven Scientific Computing, located at CASA, the Center for
Analysis, Scientific Computing and Applications of TU Eindhoven.

The candidate is expected to develop numerical methods for inverse
problems where the goal is to recover the state of a physical system
based on a limited set of noisy partial observations. The study will
focus on physical phenomena that are modeled with high-dimensional
PDEs involving strong advection effects. Examples of such equations
can be conservation laws, transport or kinetic equations,
Fokker-Planck equations, or Mean Field Game Equations. For this type
of advection-dominated problems, it is known that classical linear
approximation methods are not well suited. The postdoctoral candidate
will address this problem by developing nonlinear methods based on
optimal transport, and machine learning. In order to address high
dimensionality, and many-query evaluations, nonlinear model order
reduction of parametric PDEs may be required.

Candidates with strong coding experience are welcome to apply.
Candidates without coding experience but with strong background in
analysis are also welcome to apply.
