Bad week for readers in Tennessee. HB843 which worked its way through the house last year was approved by the Senate Education Committee - it will most likely go to full Senate soon. HB843/SB1060 rewrites the Age Appropriate Materials Act of 2022 and declares that certain materials are not appropriate for a student in any of the grades K-12 and prohibits such materials from being maintained in a school's library collection. Wonder what books on Bulso's Top TEN-N list (HB1828) won't be allowed in schools?
The Senate Education Committee is hearing multiple bills TNLA is reviewing.  The library petition bill, HB1661/SB2173, will be discussed by the Senate and House.  Petitions will be determined by judicial districts so if you want to see your judicial district, here is a map - https://www.tncourts.gov/jdmap - a petition in Puckett County could have impacts on what books are allowed in the youth section in  Cookeville and potentially the education school at TN Tech. SB2107 is also on the agenda, in which "any actual, simulated, animated, described, or alluded to" sexually explicit content must be removed from a school library otherwise funding will be withheld from a school. Finally SB1585 which allows parents and eligible parents to sue a school district of the Age Appropriate Materials Act is moving forward in the Senate Education Committee - it is currently behind the budget in the House.
The Open Meeting bill has been scheduled again on the Criminal Justice Subcommittee on Tuesday and will most likely be amended. If you want to become an amendment hound, feel free to sign up for the TN House Dashboard (https://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/Dashboard/Login).
