Hi NC1186 leadership,

Circling back to this, was anyone able to check about multiple meeting designations?   I suspect we may need to get the meeting designation before the meeting happens.

Happy new year and see some of you next week.

You don't often get email from [log in to unmask]. Learn why this is important

I definitely support this idea! It would be good all around.

I would definitely vote for the possibility to have another event each year be an NC1186 outreach event, and specifically including January in 2024. It would enable me (and I suspect others) to use Ag Expt Station funding for one or both, and we are evolving as a group to include outreach events each year in addition to the annual meeting.

Folks,

Do we know if it’s possible to have two annual meetings officially listed for the working group?  I’m curious because this option could provide potential option to request institutional travel assistance for either (or maybe both 50:50) of the two potential gatherings  (January Temecula, CA, and May TBD, NJ).

Cheers,

Lloyd

Raul,

I think this is an excellent framework on which to proceed with the dual meetings this year.  I look forward to seeing you in NJ in May, and helping in any way I can with the proposal.

Take care,

Annual Mtg of NC-1186 Multistate Project

Hi all,

Here is an update and suggested course of action regarding the annual meeting of the NC-186 group for this new FY 2023-2024

Background:

Right after our last NC-1186 meeting (6-8 September 2023) in Cincinnati, OH, Garrett Owen sent out a Qualtrics Poll to canvass the group about preferences for our next 2024 meeting. The two options were:

1.       To have meeting “blended-in” with the IPPS (International Plant Propagators Society-Western Region meeting) in Temecula, CA (near San Diego), on 23-26 January 2024.

2.       Have the annual meeting in southern New Jersey (hosted by me) towards the end of May 2024 (either 22-24 or 29-31).

Ten responses were received for this poll, with 8 indicating (and 2 maybe) they would attend an NC-1186 meeting held concurrently with the IPPS in California. There were no direct votes on that poll for the New Jersey meeting in May, but I did receive directly one such vote via e-mail.

Polling and e-mail exchange from week of 6-10 November 2023.

Thanks to the inquiry of some of you, last week we had a renewed and nice exchange of votes, thoughts and ideas for our next annual meeting. Out of the received e-mail responses (from 16 individuals) I tallied the following: 15 votes for being able to attend a meeting within the IPPS in California in January 2024, and 14 votes for likely being able to attend a meeting in late May 2024 in New Jersey. Note that a majority (13) of the 16 e-mail respondents here will actually be attending/participating in the IPPS meeting in CA.

There were some very thoughtful observations and comments about some of the difficulties and/or disagreements from the NC1186 membership regarding where/when/how to have our annual meetings, and that these differences might reflect a “swingy” dynamics/attendance these past two years.

For the record, the official (2020-2025) NC-1186 membership includes 29 individuals from 19 states. Based on annual meeting attendance and station reports for the past two years, we have had a participation in the range of 45% to 65% of the “official” state/individual membership. While it could be argued that these figures are fairly decent, and that our (reported) collective accomplishments are remarkable, I echo the comments from some of you that we need to promote/encourage/recruit the participation of new/younger members from existing and more states. We are already facing the retirement of several of the original members of this multistate group, and the country’s agriculture, in particular specialty crops, are facing major water-related challenges this decade. We certainly need new members with new/novel/innovative ideas to be incorporated into the renewal proposal that this multistate group needs to turn-in by 1 September 2024 (for the 2026-2030 period).

With all this information in mind, I propose:

1.       To hold official annual meeting in May, on a hybrid modality, to entice/encourage the direct participation and input of recent/new members as we craft the renewal proposal.

2.       To those attending IPPS in California I suggest we have a brief/informal meeting (maybe afternoon/evening of Thursday January 25) to craft a preliminary outline for the renewal proposal, to be then shared electronically to all membership for further input and refining.

3.       Have a couple of online meetings -thru the Spring semester- to identify leaders and teams to work on the narrative and justification of specific objectives/tasks chosen for the renewal proposal.

By all means, please suggest alternative ideas that elicit wide, novel and diverse participation on this multistate group.

Best regards,

Raul
