Dear Geography and Sustainability Students,

                 

I hope your semester is off to a good start.  Please see attached announcement related to GIS specialist opening to work with a community development firm working with Knoxville government on housing equity in the city. The announcement is also listed below.

 

Please note that the early deadline for responding is this week (today). I am sorry for the late notice, but I just got word of this a day or so ago. I would suggest that if you have an interest, then contact the employer (Rob Braymaier) NOW and indicate your interest and need for another day or so to apply.

 

The hiring organization would prefer a grad student but they would consider an exceptional undergrad as well (especially after I bragged about our undergrads). Obviously, the key factor is strong GIS skills.

GIS Specialist Position

The Opportunity

Community Solutions Collaborative, LLC (CSC) is a small consulting firm that is currently contracted to conduct fair housing services for the City of Knoxville. To accomplish this task, CSC will create maps of Knoxville, Knox County, and the Knoxville MSA.

CSC is currently searching for a student with significant GIS experience to assist with the creation of maps that demonstrate patterns, trends, and issues in Knoxville and the region.

The compensation for this work is $30 per hour. With an expectation of approximately 80 hours of time spent on the project in February.

Supervision will be provided and collaboration will be included, however the candidate should have the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Competencies

                   Candidates for this position should be familiar with the use of Quantum GIS (QGIS). CSC is currently using the Firenze release of QGIS (version 3.28.14).

                   Candidates should be able to create dot density, graduated symbol, and rule-based maps.

                   Candidates should be able to 1) map multiple layers within a map, 2) crop shapefiles to exclude irrelevant areas, 3) customize symbology, labeling, and map elements, and 4)

                   Candidates should have a strong understanding of cartographic standards including readability, projection, and scalability.

Work on mapping will begin soon, requiring a quick turnaround for applications. Applications received by 5:00 p.m. Central time, Thursday, January 25, 2024 will be reviewed quickly. Calls to set up interviews will occur on Friday, January 26, 2024. Interviews will be conducted during the week of January 29.
