Dr. Maggie Sugg (geo.appstate.edu/faculty-staff/dr-maggie-sugg) at Appalachian State University in the Department of Geography and Planning is seeking multiple graduate students at the master’s level-funded through the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Science Foundation’s CAREER grant to work on multi-year funded projects. Dr. Sugg’s research broadly focuses on health patterns and how these patterns relate to underlying social, environmental, and climatic determinants. 

 

The funded Graduate Research Assistant will work directly with Dr. Sugg on multiple projects examining patterns of adolescent mental health, maternal health, and climate-health interactions. Candidates should have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Interest in public health, medical geography, spatial analysis, and/or climate science

  • Experience or willingness to learn advanced statistical methodologies focused on causal inference and/or geospatial cluster analysis.  

  • Experience with geographical data and analyses (using GIS software)

  • Coursework or professional experience in geography, statistics, or health sciences

  • Capacity to work and think independently, develop and implement own ideas, and persistence in completing tasks.

  • High proficiency in English (both written and verbal) and experience with scientific writing.
