Be Alert 

The UTK and UT System Administration cybersecurity teams have seen a recent uptick in attempts and threats to our organization. It takes a team effort to ensure our security. Here are a few reminders to be extra observant and cautious while using technology. 

• When searching the web, ensure you visit reputable websites and apps. Do not download suspicious files. 
• Be cautious of emails, messages, chats, or links from unknown sources. 
• Never click on any links or attachments from questionable sources. 
• Check to see if a suspicious message has been reported as phishing on OIT’s System Status Center. If not, report the email to OIT Abuse by forwarding the message with full headers to abu[log in to unmask]. 
• Encrypt emails or use the UT Vault to send sensitive information. The University will never contact you to confirm your password or personal information. 

• Connect to eduroam while using Wi-Fi on campus.

Antivirus for Macs: Microsoft Defender

In addition to all the great offerings included with your Microsoft license, Microsoft Defender is one of them. If you have not installed Defender for macOS, it is available for UT-owned computers on the OIT Software Download site. Defender works with the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Protection console to report suspicious activity to OIT.

We have already enrolled many UT Windows computers in the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Protection program, including those managed by Microsoft InTune and Active Directory. We are offering the same protection for UT-owned macOS computers.

 

If you need help installing Defender or require remediation for viruses or malware on a UT-owned computer, contact OIT’s Desktop Support team online or the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900.

Get the Best Wi-Fi Connection on Campus

Access UT’s most secure wireless connection by choosing the eduroam network as your primary wireless network while on campus. When selecting a Wi-Fi network option on your laptop, phone, or mobile device, select eduroam, then sign in using your UT email address and password.

Here’s how to use eduroam, disable private Wi-Fi addressing, and avoid sticky clients.

Are you teaching one of UT’s large lecture halls and would like to have your class scheduled to record automatically? Let OIT help get your classes recorded in a variety of ways:

Microsoft Teams – Tip of the Week

Add People to a Chat in Teams  

Do you have an existing Chat and need to add someone to the conversation? For example, your team has a Chat dedicated to a specific work topic with a set group of co-workers, and you want to add a new hire to that work topic. You can always add or delete people from existing chats in Microsoft Teams. When you add people, choose whether you want to include all the chat history, some, or none of the chat history. It’s up to you!

QDA Miner by Provalis Research, Inc.

QDA Miner is a software package that aids in the qualitative analysis of text or images. In addition to purely qualitative functions like creating and applying coding structures, QDA Miner also provides more numerical functions such as analysis of coding co-occurrences and analyzing coding by other variables such as age or gender.

Safeguarding Your Remote Work

Remote work in higher education is now the norm. To keep your online work safe using university-provided tools like OneDrive and Microsoft Teams, follow these straightforward steps:

1. Secure Your Wi-Fi:
   Set a strong password for your home Wi-Fi to keep unwanted visitors out.
2. Leverage University Tools:
   Make the most of university-provided tools like OneDrive for file storage and Microsoft Teams for meetings and collaboration.
3. Device Protection:
   Keep your devices (computer, tablet, phone) updated with security patches.
4. Secure Video Calls:
   Use University-endorsed video chat tools like Microsoft Teams for private meetings. Enhance security by adding a password to your meetings and using waiting rooms.
5. Two-Step Verification (2FA):
   Strengthen your account security by enabling 2FA in university-provided services.
6. File Sharing Safely:
   If you must share sensitive information, consider using the university’s vault system at https://vault.utk.edu. The UT vault ensures that only the specified recipient can access the information.
7. Remote Desktop Caution:
   Exercise care when using remote desktop tools, ensuring they are approved by the OIT.
8. Beware of Phishing Emails:
   Learn how to recognize and avoid phishing emails, especially when working remotely.
9. Back-Up Your Work:
   Safeguard your work by saving it in Microsoft OneDrive. OneDrive also supports versioning of files in case of corruption or infection.
10. Report Suspicious Activity:
    If you notice anything unusual or suspicious, report it to OIT. It is better to be safe than sorry.

 

Working remotely in higher education is convenient and secure when you use the university-provided tools while taking these precautionary steps.
