Research Computing Support Changes for Faculty
Are you a researcher and need help performing statistical analysis, analyzing data, or creating survey questions? OIT offers customized assistance to faculty, graduate students, and others on advanced statistical methods, qualitative research, survey methodology, and GIS. OIT staff have co-authored over 270 research manuscripts and spend more than 3,500 hours yearly consulting on projects that directly impact academic research activities at the university.

For Faculty and Staff
OIT recently enhanced faculty and staff support by increasing the hours available for research computing assistance up to 50 hours per year. Additionally, research consultants may be included in grants at a 2-3%/yr FTE allocation where the team member is considered either a collaborator or consultant and listed as a senior/key personnel as defined by the NIH or the appropriate granting agency.

For Students
Students may request up to 15 hours of support per semester for help with research manuscripts, thesis, dissertations, and capstone research projects. All consultations are conveniently performed over Zoom.
Topics we can assist with include:

  * Advanced statistical analyses and quantitative research methodologies
  *   Biostatistics and experimental design
  * Qualitative research design and analysis
  * Geocoding and geo-visualization for Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  * Technical support and training for research design, including software questions in ArcGIS, NVivo, Qualtrics, R, SAS, SPSS, and Stata, among others
  * Web survey design using Qualtrics
  * Sample size determination and power analysis
If you wish to schedule a one-on-one consultation with one of our staff or need help installing statistical software, contact the OIT HelpDesk online<https://utk.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a348841b15d00f4d14e00fb59&id=bbc2e3f51a&e=d26cbd71e0> or by phone at 865-974-9900.

OIT to Begin Supporting BlueSky Statistics
OIT now supports BlueSky Statistics<https://utk.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a348841b15d00f4d14e00fb59&id=d0e0502483&e=d26cbd71e0>, an open-source alternative to SPSS and R Studio. BlueSky Statistics provides researchers with a point-and-click software environment for statistical analysis that runs available R code behind the scenes. The BlueSky graphical user interface (GUI) includes a series of dialogs to import and manipulate data and perform statistical analysis and visualization tasks in a familiar GUI-based platform consistent with other statistical software packages. In addition, the inclusion of a simple R editor provides the ability to learn and run R code while performing data analysis tasks.
Highlights include:

  * Comprehensive – GUI for 400+ statistics, graphics, machine learning, modeling, quality control, reliability engineering, and more
  * Advanced – Powered by R and Python with cutting-edge analysis and reproducibility
  * Collaborative – Save analysis to MS Office, R Markdown, HTML, and LaTeX
  * Productive – Consolidate point solutions, share/reproduce/reuse, no coding needed

Featured Research Software: Mathematica
Mathematica is available for download for all UTK, UTS, and UTHSC students, faculty, and staff from the University of Tennessee software distribution site. Mathematica, developed by Wolfram Research, Inc. (WRI), is computational software used in science, engineering, finance, and other areas of computing that require mathematics. The Wolfram Mathematica License Agreement between OIT and WRI provides Mathematica for Mac, Linux, and Windows 64-bit platforms.
Mathematic version 13.3 new features:

  * Functions for calling large language models
  * Ability to publish 3D graphics and geometries to AR devices
  * Ability to generate an image from a textual prompt
  *   And more...

[What is HPSC? image of computer cluster]
What is High-Performance Computing?
High-performance computing (HPC) generally refers to the practice of aggregating computing power in a way that delivers much higher performance than one could get out of a typical, single desktop computer or workstation to solve large problems in science, engineering, or business.
OIT’s High Performance and Scientific Computing (HPSC) team offers two HPC environments:

  * ISAAC Secure Enclave for research with sensitive information
  * ISAAC Open Enclave for research not involving any sensitive information.
The HPSC team provides various services, including system administration support, scientific computing support, documentation, training, software installation and maintenance, research proposal consultation, and more.
Submit Your Questions to HPSC<https://utk.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a348841b15d00f4d14e00fb59&id=94bdc48c83&e=d26cbd71e0>

[HPSC Research Proposal]
Research Proposal Development Support from HPSC
OIT High Performance & Scientific Computing (HPSC) provides research computing resources and services to the University community, including:

  * ISAAC, the Infrastructure for Scientific Applications and Advanced Computing the Advanced Computing Facility.
  * Research proposal support for equipment to be placed in any of the ISAAC clusters or professional support.
Along with the ISAAC, the HPSC supports faculty and researchers in preparing proposals involving computational resources such as equipment, virtual machines, and professional services, including Computational Scientist (SciComp) or system administrator support.
