Subject: White River National Forest GS-9/11 GIS Specialist - 2 Permanent Positions. Reply Due 8/25

Hello everyone!

The main pitch of this email: If you had a student that recently graduated or have a student that is about to graduate in the summer semester and they are looking for a job opportunity as a GIS Specialist with the federal government, please encourage them to fill out the outreach for the two GIS Specialists positions on the White River National Forest.

Overwhelming but useful information to know for interested applicants: The White River National Forest is currently conducting an outreach for two GIS Specialists. The Forest Service always conducts an outreach (a public notice that announce upcoming job opportunities) before the application is posted on USAJOBS (the depository of currently available job opportunities with the federal government https://www.usajobs.gov/). The point of the outreach is to help hiring managers get a sense of how to best promote the positions since there are various hiring authorities to hire qualified candidates. Interested applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or National in order to apply.

One of the many hiring authorities utilized in the federal government is the Recent Graduate Program. To qualify, the applicant must apply for a position within two years of when the certificate or degree has been conferred. For more details, interested applicants can read this: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/students-recent-graduates/#url=graduates.

Duty station for these two vacant GIS Specialists positions are Glenwood Springs, CO, or remote within 250 miles of Glenwood Springs, CO. Salary is standardized across all agencies using the GS Pay Scale. Please note that salary is adjusted depending if the agreed upon duty station falls in a designated locality pay area. Information about starting salary is publicly available here: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2023/general-scheduleStarting.

  * Based out of the Rest of the United States (which is what Glenwood Springs, CO falls under):
     *   $57,118 for a GS-9
     *   $69,107 for a GS-11
  * Based out of the Colorado Springs Locality Pay Area ( https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2023/locality-pay-area-definitions/#CO-CO):
     *   $58,397 for a GS-9
     *   $70,655 for a GS-11
  * Based out of Denver-Aurora Locality Pay Area (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2023/locality-pay-area-definitions/#DE-CO):
     *   $63,271 for a GS-9
     *   $76.551 for a GS-11
Although, the salary is lower than the private industry salaries, the federal government does provide great retirement and health benefits (https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/working-in-government/benefits/), and federal employees can qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program (https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service), something that is not possible to participate in if one works in the private sector. Hiring incentives to highly qualified candidates could potentially be offered such as the Student Loan Repayment Incentive (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/student-loan-repayment/). However, it is not a guarantee depending on the status of the forest's budget at the time of the job offer.

It is highly encouraged that interested applicants submit a federal resume instead of their CV or standard resume. The federal government resume requires a higher level of detail than the standard resume and slightly more details than a CV. It is advised for applicants that already have a CV to just reformat it and add the additional details asked of in a federal resume. Applicants with a CV will note that the federal resume puts work experience first and then education. For more information on what information is required to have on a federal resume, please go here: https://www.usajobs.gov/help/how-to/account/documents/resume/build/.

To express interested in the position, please contact the hiring manager, the Renewable Resources and Planning Staff Officer, Chuck Burley at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Thank you!

Marjorie
