Subject: Congratulations to Jamie Alumbaugh!

Hi folks,

I'm very pleased to share the news -- just announced -- that Ph.D. student Jamie Alumbaugh won the Poster Award in the AAG Paleoenvironmental Change Specialty Group (PEC) Student Presentation Competition at AAG 2023.

Jamie's poster entitled: “Non-Pollen Palynomorphs from Lake Sediments in the Cordillera de Talamanca” describes the first use in the highlands of Costa Rica of a little used paleoenvironmental indicator, namely, fungal spores and other "non-pollen" organic remains that are present on slides prepared for pollen analysis but typically ignored by researchers. These "Non-pollen palynomorphs" or NPP can shed light on past climates and environments, complementing other proxies such as stable isotopes, charcoal, and pollen. Some of the fungal spores Jamie is cataloging have been linked to fires; others to drought conditions -- and still others to populations of large mammals, including some now extinct mammals! Yes that's right, we are talking about prehistoric dung fungi, used in eastern north America as evidence of mastodon and mammoth populations at the end of the last glaciation!

Please join me in congratulating Jamie on this award for her research!

Sincerely,

Sally
