Call for applications – internship with the Nurture Nature Center (NNC) working on social science research related to Weather Prediction Center products
The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) of the National Weather Service (NWS) provides a broad suite of forecast information, including hydro-meteorological forecast products, as well
as products for extreme temperature, winter weather and general weather information. There is a need for better understanding of user needs for precipitation forecast products. To address these needs, NNC, a nonprofit organization that has been conducting
social science research related to NWS forecast products for the last decade, has started a multi-phase social science research study and design project that will provide user testing and iterative refinement of precipitation products. The study will produce
an extensive set of user-tested recommendations for display and delivery, including recommendations for redesigned forecast products, dashboard, and WPC website.
The research team is looking to hire student interns throughout the project to help with tasks related to the project, including research, note-taking and literature reviews, help with survey development,
and other tasks. The intern will gain significant professional development and be introduced to the social science methodology and approaches as well as the products developed by NOAA/NWS. We anticipate having one student per year with the length and time
commitment of the internship being dictated by the student’s needs/availability. A generous stipend will be provided to the intern and hybrid/remote work options will be considered.
We encourage interested applicants to complete
this application by April 1, 2023 and to reach out with any questions (email Dr. Kathryn Semmens
[log in to unmask]). The team will review applications and respond within 4-6 weeks.
