Subject: March 2023 Newsletter from Diplomat in Residence South

U.S. diplomats had a busy February.  We responded quickly to the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria and supported President Biden's trip to Kyiv and other diplomatic efforts to counter Russia's ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine.  We also celebrated the accomplishments of our colleagues during Black History Month.

We continue to recruit students and professionals to join us in our efforts.  Here's a summary of our programs for March.

Women's History Month Events

On March 13 at 6 PM Eastern, my colleagues Susan Falatko and Michelle Kayser will host an online panel discussion with women subject matter experts on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career opportunities at the Department of State.

On March 23, my colleague Kyla Brooke will lead an online panel titled "Women in Leadership @State: Successes and Challenges."  Please follow our careers LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook accounts for details on this and other Women's History Month programs.

Student Internship Program Applications for Fall 2023

The Department of State's Student Internship Program application period for the fall of 2023 is open March 1-11.  These 10-week paid internships also provide transportation from the student's address of record to the internship location, as well as housing.  Juniors, seniors, and graduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher who will continue their studies after their internship may apply.

New Portal for Federal Government Internships

The Office of Personnel Management just launched a portal for internships across the federal government.  Visit intern.usajobs.gov and search for internships by federal agency, location, or salary.

Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarships

The deadline to apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program and the John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is March 9 for study abroad and internships taking place between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024.  Nearly 3,000 Gilman scholarships worth up to $5,000 each will be awarded this year for study or internships abroad.  Applicants must be Pell Grant recipients for the Gilman Scholarship, or Title IV federal financial aid recipients for the Gilman-McCain scholarship.

The October deadline for these scholarships will open in mid-August 2023 for internships and study abroad taking place between December 1, 2023 and October 1, 2024.
