The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland Forest Service, is
currently accepting applications for up to 11 Tree Planting Specialists to
implement the 5 Million Trees Initiative, a 9-year program established by
the 2021 Tree Solutions Now Act. Positions will reach out to community
groups and landowners to expand interest in tree planting, plan and conduct
tree plantings, map and report plantings, and support continued care and
management of trees and forests, including invasive species control. Work
may include tree seed collection with volunteers or staff. One position
will help expand tree seedling production at the John S. Ayton Tree
Nursery, including coordination of tree seed collection. Projects will be
on public and private land, and cover urban and rural settings. Particular
focus will be on urban, underserved areas most in need of trees for human
health and environmental benefits. The positions will be part of the 5
Million Trees Team and will work in field offices with regional forestry

This position is responsible for managing a complex integrated geospatial
(GIS) database management system utilized in the development of annual
forest work plans to direct on-going sustainable forest management
activities on the Forest. Position is also critically needed to assist with
the daily field operations of the Green Ridge State Forest, including
timber sale preparation for revenue generation, inventory work for the
development of the annual work plan/long-range management plan, maintaining
updated boundary shape files, and geo- referencing boundary lines to new
GIS reference points. Position is essential for achieving requirements of
Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
third-party sustainable forest certification. Position requires highly
specialized knowledge of GIS software (ARC 10.2), operation of GPS and
field data recorders, and ability to integrate this information into the
Green Ridge State Forest data management system. Requirements include
querying the database to develop alternative management strategies and the
production of specialized forest management maps used in the Public Review
process.
