Note that there are opportunities for high school students as well, should you know any looking for an opportunity. (Bryan -- thinking of your students at L&N and copying you for that reason!) In my experience, grad students in our program typically need the summer break to work on their thesis/dissertation research, but in some cases a summer program might contribute to the research. I strongly encourage undergrads who may want to attend graduate school to investigate summer opportunities. These opportunities can help you learn more about your interests and thus shape your graduate school goals, plus give you experience that will set your application apart from others.
