Eliza Greenstadt [log in to unmask] Date: November 10, 2022 Subject: John L. Greenstadt Obituary Obituary John Lester Greenstadt October 8, 1924 - October 17, 2022 John L. Greenstadt, researcher in applied mathematics, died on October 17, 2022 just after his 98th birthday. He was born October 8, 1924 in Manhattan, NY to Alice (Fischler) and Morris ("Moe") Greenstadt. Recognizing John's talent in mathematics, the U.S. army employed him to work on flight engineering and artillery targeting during the height of World War II. After leaving the military at the rank of sergeant, John earned a BA in Physics at Brooklyn College and then attended Yale University on the GI Bill, where in 1953 he received a PhD in mathematical physics. He worked as a physicist at H.K. Ferguson Co. while finishing his degree before joining IBM as a staff scientist from 1952-1985, during which time he published several important papers that continue to have impact today. He was one of the first to use a variational technique to derive a better numerical optimization method-work in the 1970s that, as he reminisced in a 2000 article ("An Abridged History of Cell Discretization" LNCSE 11), stimulated the development of the ubiquitous BFGS method that appears in so many computational toolboxes today. One current researcher reports, "In my software I use a 'Greenstadt modification' to keep something called working weight matrices positive-definite." Another finds "the & work of Dr. Greenstadt both deep and inspiring. So, I would say that Dr. Greenstadt was a great thinker to be memorialized forever." John will also be remembered by the Mountain View community for his incisive wit, playful humor, and prodigious knowledge of a variety of subjects from politics to history to art to music. Not one to suffer fools gladly, he nonetheless charmed friends and acquaintances with his gentle consideration and sweetness. He maintained his physical and mental acuity until the very end of his life when, sadly, the death of his beloved wife of over 20 years, Karen Lynn Greenstadt, spurred a decline in his own health. Even in the hospital, though, he continued to joke with the medical staff and, they said, brought a bright spot to their days. John will be mourned by his brother Bill and niece Amy ("Eliza") Greenstadt, as well as his sister-in-law Nancy Bush and his wife Karen's son, Paulie Germano. He is also survived by two adult children from a previous marriage and a granddaughter. ------------------------------------------------------- From: Peter Schorer [log in to unmask] Date: November 17, 2022 Subject: Improved possible proof of Goldbach's Conjecture Last summer I published a notice here about a possible proof of Goldbach's Conjecture, which asserts that each even positive integer >= 4 is the sum of two primes. There have been more than 300 visits to the paper, with only three claims of an error. Each of these turned out to be the result of a misunderstanding of the basic argument. I have now clarified the argument and in the process reduced the length of the possible proof to one page. See "Current Possible Proof" on p. 1 of "A Possible Proof of Goldbach's Conjecture" on occampress.com. I will welcome knowing the first sentence that the reader believes contains an error, and what that error is. The project is about data completion problem for motion capture systems. Motion-capture systems are used for investigating and improving various mechanical processes. There are many ways of tracking motion using such systems. In the project we focus on the problems associated with the usage of passive markers and video recording. This type of tracking requires that the markers are visible in the video which is not always the case. Therefore, tracking the motions may become problematic or even impossible and, therefore, a sophisticated method for completing the data from the missing markers is needed. If you are interested write to [log in to unmask] as soon as possible. ------------------------------------------------------- From: Michele Benzi [log in to unmask] Date: November 16, 2022 Subject: Postdoc Positions, CRM-Scuola Normale Superiore, Italy The "Centro di Ricerca Matematica Ennio De Giorgi" (CRM-PISA) invites applications for five two-year Junior Visiting Positions (2023-2025) for the following subject matters: 1. Soliton theory and integrable systems are important aspects of mathematical physics. Subtopics include soliton solutions, symmetry analysis, Darboux transformation, Hamiltonian structure, and so on. Darboux transformation of integrable equations is an important tool for searching for soliton solutions through spectral problems or Lax pairs. Symmetry obtained by the Lie group of transformations is important in the unusual properties of ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, which has extensive applications in physics science.
