Background
FAF is produced through a partnership between the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and FHWA. FAF integrates data from various sources to create a comprehensive picture of freight movement among States and major metropolitan areas by all modes of transportation. The 2017 Commodity Flow Survey and international trade data serve as the foundation of FAF. FAF provides estimates for tonnage and value by regions, origin and destination, commodity type, and mode for base year 2017 and a 30-year forecast. FAF5 forecasts provide information on future freight demand for three economic growth scenarios at five-year increments through 2050, by various modes of transportation.

Every five years, FHWA and BTS produce a full update of FAF in conjunction with the U.S. Census Bureau's Commodity Flow Survey and U.S. Economic Census release. Recently, the latest version of this resource (FAF5) was jointly released by BTS and FHWA.

This webinar is the second in a two-part series. The first webinar (held July 2022) provided an overview of FAF5 base year data and forecasted data; and highlighted a web-based data tool available for FAF users.
