I have been struggling with exactly what to say to convey the depth of my
sadness at Missy's passing. Professionally, she was an integral part of my
career arc through TLA committees, and I would be a lesser librarian
without her influence. Personally, I have so enjoyed being in any room
Missy was in. She made me feel welcome and cared for at conferences when I
was a newbie library worker who was thinking about making librarianship my
career. She empowered me and made me feel that library leadership was
attainable—that I could do it too. But she was everyone's cheerleader
because she knew that there was enough applause for everyone.
She will be missed by so many who knew her better than I, who got to work
alongside her for many more years, but boy, am I going to miss her too. I
can't help but feel as though so many librarians in Tennessee stand on her
shoulders and the great work she has done—I know I do.
