Good Evening Geographers and Sustainers,
A friend and colleague of mine is teaching an upper level research based course this fall focused on medical entomology and a specific mosquito borne disease that is endemic to East Tennessee. I've had the opportunity to work with Dr. Becky Trout-Fryxell for the last three years through our MEGA:BITESS program and know from experience that she would be an amazing mentor for anyone interested in community health, epidemiology, science communications, or geospatial technology. If you're thinking about attending graduate school, this would be an amazing opportunity to work on a research project to help you determine if graduate school would be a good fit and to provide some excellent material for your resume. I've provided some links below where you can learn more about Dr. Trout-Fryxell and our MEGA:BITESS project.

Be sure to verify with your advisor and/or Tommy Brown that this course will count towards whatever you need to graduate. Feel free to reach out to me with any project related questions you may have.

This fall I will be teaching a unique research entomology-based experience.
Last fall (2019), the Trout Fryxell lab tested the idea that community clean ups not only reduce litter in an area, but also reduce containers that hold water and those mosquitoes. We set out traps just prior to and just after the East Knoxville community clean up in August and found that mosquito eggs were significantly reduced, but we couldn't really see that clear reduction in adults (was it clean up or was it October?). Fast forward to this year, and we are now partnering with KeepKnoxvilleBeautiful<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.keepknoxvillebeautiful.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cmcampono%40utk.edu%7C6531596c169d483111d508da70d7b923%7C515813d9717d45dd9eca9aa19c09d6f9%7C0%7C0%7C637946369072512884%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=hIfjs8BZGlAvbv8eQmOPAu%2FMZmbhPHF98VypvFhOySk%3D&reserved=0> to assess mosquito populations at several sites (prior to and after clean ups).

We have now built this experience into a research and service learning course for undergraduate students, listed as EPP 499R. Interested students should register for it as a 2 credit hour course.
Students enrolled in this course will learn a combination of field and laboratory techniques for a BSL2 laboratory. You will get to work "closely" with middle and high school students via the MEGA:BITESS program<mailto:MEGA:BITESS%20program> as well.
Dates and times of the course will be set as a cohort. We will meet for 1hr a week as a group (dependent on all of our schedules) and the other hour will be spent doing science (counting eggs, data entry, rearing mosquitoes, identifying mosquitoes, building graphs, building maps, etc.) or service (participating in the clean up)

If you have questions, please feel free to email me ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
