Dear students,

Please see two exciting, PAID research opportunities below, for undergraduate and graduate students. I spoke with Dr. Hidalgo today and he is very interested in underrepresented (BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+) student participation.  He is also a fantastic mentor. Please email him if interested.

Subject: SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

Hi LaToya,

Thank you for sharing these opportunities with your students. If they are interested, tell them to apply before the end of this week, or at least they should send me a letter stating their interest. We will begin our application review process before the end of next week.

Thanks!!!

We are seeking motivated students to join TWO research experiences this summer 2022, especially populations of underrepresented students in STEM (Black, Latinx, Native American, LGBTQ+). Both programs include field-lab-conference preparation, academic socialization, mentorship by URM investigators, and comprehensive training in the lab and the field. The activities and framework planned will strengthen students’ knowledge of Earth Sciences, provide life skills that will prepare them for an impactful career in academia or industry, and enhance their academic performance, confidence, and sense of belonging through mentorship and social support.

The highlights of these two 30-day research experiences include field visits, stipend, and attendance to one conference, all covered by the program.

1- International Research Experience in Costa Rica (July 11th to August 13th ). Application from graduate and undergraduate students welcome. This project uses geodesic techniques to determine a fault zone near population centers and study magma recharge events at Rincon de la Vieja volcano. Student participants will collect data via state-of-the-art GNSS stations, InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar), and gravimeters. They will later process the data under the guidance of International mentors. Field visits: Rio celeste, Irazu Volcano, Rincon de la Vieja volcano, Poas volcano, Manuel Antonio. The main research site is between Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes. No previous knowledge about the research topic is needed. Students will be trained in the use of GIS stations, magnetometry, and synthetic simulations using MATLAB. The stipend is $2200; all travel expenses are covered.

2- Domestic Research Experience in the Wallowa Mountains, Oregon (May 24th to June 21st). Open to undergraduate students. This project aims to understand the general nature of thick feeder dikes at the Chief Joseph Dike Swarm (CJDS), including emplacement, growth mechanisms, and structural influences that contribute to flow volumes and how often these flow events occur. Students will use macro and microscopic structures observable in Scanning electron microscopy on samples that they will collect in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon. Field visit Highlights are an introduction to the geology of the Western United States by visiting Death Valley National Park (California), Mono Lake (California), Long Valley Caldera (California), and Steens Mountains (Nevada-Oregon Border).  The main research sites will be in Wallowa Mountains (Oregon) and near Anatone (Washington). No previous knowledge about the research topic is needed. The stipend is $2000; all travel expenses are covered.
