Dear Undergraduates in Geography and Sustainability,

As you will see below, Student Disability Services is looking to hire someone who can serve as an assistant for a student taking a Geology course who needs an assistant.

If you are available and interested, please contact Mr. David Ndiaye, Director of Student Disability Services.

I see some plusses and possible minuses with this, and will go ahead and mention both.

On the plus side, you could really help a student, and being in a Geology lab in the capacity of an assistant might be really interesting.  Even career enhancing, as well as something that would make you feel very proud of yourself.  It's a great way to use your background to help others, and get paid a bit for doing so!

On the minus side, I have no idea what level of masking and social distancing might be happening in the Geology lab in which the student needs assistance.

Of course, YOU can mask up, and as an employee of Disability Services you ought to be eligible to get some high quality KN-95 masks, as given to UT employees, at no cost.

And to me it would be reasonable to ask the student you are helping to please mask up, and hopefully he or she would.  But as to the other students and the GTA in the Geology course, I have no way of knowing what you would find.

In our own courses in Geography and Sustainability, as you know we are really counting on all students to volunteer to protect each other by wearing masks and keeping as much distance as possible.  And, not coming to class if ill.

Best wishes,

Sally Horn
