Hello SIS Student Colleagues.

Are you interested in environmental sustainability and social justice? 

Do you wonder how you can use your CCI skillset  to help support the development of equitable technologies? 

Are you a pioneer who envisions better ways to make technology more useful to society?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions – consider learning how communication and information skills support  the democratization of energy technology and provide the foundation for a more prosperous, just, and sustainable future for society – in the new course -- ESE 597.  It is being offered this spring.   

ESE 597 is a unique course with a transdisciplinary approach that has integrated learning modules featuring perspectives about  the technology, effects of the technology on the community, and design of the technology for the user.  Three  subject experts have worked together to create and deliver the course which is hosted by the Bredesen Center.

• Dr. Jagit Nanda, R&D Group Leader at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will  introduce the underlying technologies of Energy Storage Devices so students from all domains can gain an understanding of the promise and challenges of the technology.
• Dr. Amy Elias, director of the UT Humanities Center, will explore the cultural histories related to energy science and engineering and the effect on the communities it wishes to serve.
• Dr. Suzie Allard, professor of Information Sciences, will focus on improving technology for the user by integrating user experience considerations into the design process.

This course features a student engagement approach to  thinking about  new ways to help communities benefit more from exciting new emerging energy technologies.

ESE 597 is a 3 credit course offered face-to-face on Wednesday 1-3:30 in Greve Hall 408.

While I am specifically inviting CCI students, students from all colleges are welcome.

The course is also open to advanced undergraduate students.
