Good Afternoon Students!

It’s time again for our UTK Geography Virtual Career Mingle coming up on Wednesday November 17, 2021. We’ve recruited dozens of professional geographers and sustainers who are eager to share what they love about their profession with you, how they achieved their professional goals, and answer your questions. Details for the event are posted below. You can also watch this short video<https://youtu.be/imTmr_OkZP0> (8 minutes) about the event.

What is a career mingle? Unlike a traditional job fair, you’re the one asking all the questions. The purpose of a career mingle is for you to learn about professional opportunities that you might not know about.

What questions should I ask during a career mingle? Alexis Andershock has compiled a list of informational interview questions<https://career.utk.edu/students/develop-career-tools/interviewing/informational-interviews/> as a great starting point. You can also use the UTK Big Interview<https://utk.biginterview.com/> platform to learn more about informational interviews (Big Interview Getting Started Guide PDF<https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiL0eiflYz0AhUzsTEKHbhMBCEQFnoECA8QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcareer.utk.edu%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F56%2F2020%2F07%2FBig-Interview-User-Guide_Final.pdf&usg=AOvVaw105mlKhVXczrxa59YERiIc>). Details for both are in the video linked above.

How do I know who to talk with? Easy, check out the complete list of attendees via Handshake<https://career.utk.edu/handshake/> (details for finding the event and the attendees on Hanshake are in the video linked above). Attached you’ll also find a PDF with details about the different people attending. Each organization even has a “Be sure to ask me about…” section. Find the organizations and people that interest you. The organizations attending cover all of our department’s sub-disciplines in physical geography, human and cultural geography, urban and regional planning, sustainability, and geospatial technology. We have representatives from non-profits, the private sector, local government, state government, federal agencies, and the national lab.

Is this only for upperclassmen? Nope. Almost every one of the organizations attending the event have internships available. Be sure to ask about those opportunities, where you can learn more about them, and what skills and characteristics you need to be considered for one of these opportunities. Plus, it helps to know early if a career you’re interested in requires going to graduate school.

Is there any reason for graduate students to attend? Of course. There’s no way I’d leave you out. Many of the attendees have advanced degrees. And many of these organizations have opportunities available just for graduate students. For some organizations, having an advanced degree will substitute for years of experience and can bring you in at a higher level and pay scale.

Talking to strangers makes me uncomfortable. Any tips? Yep. Everyone attending this event is excited to be there. They love what they do and want to share their professional passions with you. Many of them are even UTK Geography graduates. Show up with enthusiasm and curiosity and you’ll have a great time.

What time is the event? Between 2-4 pm ET on Wednesday November 17 you can sign up for one-on-one meetings and panel discussions with the attendees. Between 4-5 pm ET on Wednesday November 17 we’re hosting a panel discussion focused on green infrastructure, sustainability, and the built environment. You’ll find that event in Handshake called the Geography Career Mingle After Hours.

How do I book an appointment with one of the attendees? Log into Handshake, register for the Geography Career Mingle, and then check the Available Sessions tab. Look for 10 minute, one-on-one sessions and 30 minute group discussion times. You have to register for the event and select your appointments prior to the event. (The video linked above has all the details. There is a guide on the last page of the attached PDF as well.)

What if I have a question not answered in the attached PDF, the video linked above, or in this email? No problem, drop me or Alexis Andershock an email and we’ll do our best to help. Our contact information is in the attached PDF.
