Subject: Balinese Gamelan Open to New Members

Hello all,

UTK’s Balinese Gamelan is open to new members, including students (for credit or not), faculty, staff, and community members. https://music.utk.edu/musicology/ut-balinese-gamelan.php

We are thrilled that our new colleague ethnomusicologist Dr. Jonathan Adams, a specialist in Indonesian musics and cultures, will direct the group.

No previous experience in music or with gamelan is required. All are welcome. This is a very rewarding, collaborative music-making experience, with deep and meaningful roots and many contemporary resonances, too. The UTK School of Music is proud to be home to a special ensemble of instruments called gamelan semar pegulingan, handcrafted for UTK in Bali, and featuring metallophones, gongs, and hand percussion, along with a set of bamboo flutes.

See the attached flyer for details: please share, post and/or consider joining us on Thursdays 5 pm – 8 pm, Room 68 in the Music Building.

Jonathan and I will be glad to answer any questions.

All best,

Rachel
