Library of Congress Classification: The Basics

 

Would you like to learn more about the Library of Congress Classification system?

Do you need some clarification on how number building works, or are you confused about Cutter numbers?

 

This class will provide an overview of the structure of Library of Congress Classification, with detailed exploration of some schedules, along with short homework assignments to help you practice your learning. Topics covered also include number building, Cutter numbers, and interpreting instructions found in the classification schedules.

This course consists of two two-hour sessions:

Let It Go: Weeding Your Library's Collection

 

It's no secret that information professionals have strong opinions when it comes to weeding, but weeding your library’s collection is a vital piece of collection development.

 

Removing an item from the library is often difficult, but weeding can make your collection more accessible and more attractive to your patrons.

 

Attendees will learn about techniques for collection assessment, including how to establish evaluation criteria that fits your library, how to develop sound weeding policies, best practices and techniques for weeding your collection, and how to communicate about the process to your staff and patrons.
