In the trucking industry, changes in overall sector demand or by business segment can make it challenging for carriers to adequately forecast crisis demand compared to "normal" demand relative to the season of the year. These challenges are exacerbated when businesses that serve truck drivers, such as restaurants, themselves close or limit their hours, reducing drivers' flexibility to access necessary services. The challenges the freight transportation industry has faced since early 2020 clearly indicate a need for freight carriers across all modes, including truck carriers, to find ways to become more resilient with their operations and recover from disruptions. Carriers have tried different ways to sustain their operations. In some cases, increasing resilience involved restricting fleet capacity when freight demand was low or inconsistent. Some truck carriers also attempted to become more resilient by diversifying the kinds of products they were willing to transport, enabling them to capture "new" freight. Regardless of the exact methods used, freight carriers have needed to increase their resilience to deal with unpredictable future conditions or demand. This webinar will discuss some of the challenges the trucking industry has faced in the recent past that have required carriers and the industry as a whole to become more resilient. Lack of Resilience in Transportation Networks: Balancing Efficiency and Resilience This presentation will provide an overview of how a lack of transportation network resiliency can have a significant impact on a region's or even country's overall economy. SPEAKERS: * Dr. Igor Linkov and Dr. Andrew Strelzoff, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Examining Freight Transportation Resiliency in the For-Hire Trucking Industry This presentation will examine various metrics in the for-hire trucking industry and discuss how those metrics impact truck carrier resiliency. SPEAKER: * Dr. Jason Miller, Michigan State University, Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management Trucking Industry Lessons in Resiliency and Response - Long-Haul Truck Drivers and Accessing Food to Eat This presentation will talk about how the challenges many long-haul truck drivers had in spring 2020 accessing restaurants and other sources of food during their daily driving routines.
