Position Description

This position is the 2nd shift supervisor of The Studio, a media production and design lab, part of the Scholars’ Collaborative department in the Libraries. The person in this position is vested with supervisory and operational responsibilities including responsibility for a media lab, in-depth consulting services, and user instruction. The position supervises operations in The Studio, during the 2nd shift, including supervision of students working in the Studio. Provides basic troubleshooting for Studio computers and media source equipment.

This position works closely with other library staff to provide instructional and creative services. Provides assistance and instruction to public and staff on educational uses and applications of multimedia computer equipment, software, and production processes. Provides direction of consulting desk services and the student employees who provide them. Advises team on service issues and recommends approaches for successful and innovative service delivery. Contributes to the mission of Libraries and department through special projects and interactions.

The person will be responsible for service operations in the delivery of Studio services, during the 2nd shift, and must assure that best practices in service delivery are consistently performed. The person in this position must hire, supervise, evaluate, and organize the work assignments of student library assistants deployed in front line operations. The person in this position will be accountable for ensuring that every student employed under his/her supervision performs these procedures and carry out policies in a standard and consistent manner. The person in this position must be prepared to work independently and with a high level of autonomy that does not require close supervision.

 

Responsibilities & Duties

• Service Point Supervision:
• Manage Studio service point during the 2nd shift, including multiple spaces in the Commons South.
• Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate student assistants for their work with media computer workstations and service at the desk.
• Collect service related statistics.
• Assist with outreach and marketing of services.
• Provide back-up to student employees at service desk during 2nd shift hours.
• Follow recommended lab cleaning protocols and train and supervise students cleaning equipment and spaces.
• Provide first line of troubleshooting for hardware and software problems in Studio.
• As assigned, maintain computers and other media equipment.
• Communicate technical issues with Studio IT staff.
• Media Consulting and Instruction:
• Provide training and point-of-use instruction to students, faculty, and staff for creation and productivity of multimedia projects in The Studio.
• At the consulting desk and through individualized consulting appointments, assist clients in planning projects and using specialized software and electronic collections.
• Provide formatting assistance with integration of images and media into theses and dissertations.
• Develop instructional materials to support media and design projects.
• Work closely with the team to develop and design promotional materials and outreach for services and programs.
• Other Library Contributions:
• Maintain working knowledge of library services and provide referrals to these services as needed.
• Participate in public programming and engagement initiatives.
• Represent The Studio as an active participant on library committees.
• Participate on the Public Services group.
• Contribute to planning and other department efforts in meetings and as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications for multimedia design and development, particularly through the use of industry-standard software tools for graphics design and video editing.
• Demonstrated media production skills with use of camera equipment.
• Demonstrated skills using design software.
• Ability to supervise and train student employees in a computer lab setting.
• Public service skills.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work well with a diverse clientele and colleagues.
• Ability to learn new technologies and adapt as technologies change.
• Experience in media production, particularly through the use of industry-standard software tools for graphics design and video editing.
• Experience teaching or training with individuals or groups in formal or informal settings.
• Customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in media or design related field such as graphic design
• Demonstrated supervisory skills in an educational or computer lab environment.
• 3D modeling or design skills.
• Knowledge of VR, AR and computer-based gaming and game design.
• Knowledge and familiarity with both Macintosh and Microsoft platforms.
• Supervision experience.
• Experience working in library or computer lab environment.
• Experience teaching software workshops.
