MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree with a major in Forestry or related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional forestry experience; or

A master’s degree with a major in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university and one (1) year of professional forestry experience.

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field obtained outside the United States must either: 1) be obtained from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university in addition to the applicable required experience above; or 2) curriculum must include at least two (2) of the following four (4) courses: Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration or Forest Management in addition to the applicable required experience listed above.  NOTE:  Applicants will be required to provide a copy of their equivalency transcript showing the attained required courses listed above.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $39,915.72 annually.

Working hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

JOB DUTIES:

Responsible for assisting the State Lands Section in working with the lead agency managers of other public lands to determine the feasibility of managing timber resources on their timber lands for resource conservation and revenue generation purposes through a stewardship ethic that embraces sustainable forest management practices if they determine that timber resource management is not in conflict with the primary management objectives of the parcel.  This integrates recommendations for the development of long and short-term timber management plans for reforestation/restoration, managing, growing, nurturing, and harvesting of trees for useful products with the conservation of soil, air and water quality, wildlife and fish habitat, and aesthetics.  Provides assistance to other public agencies regarding assessment of timber resources on assigned management plans.  Keeps records on all assigned projects and checks timber harvesting, reforestation/restoration, and other forestry operations to assure compliance with contract requirements on other agencies public lands. This position may be required to perform Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) work, including FIA Certification by the United States Forest Service and the gathering and recording of FIA plot data in the field.

Performs computer operations for the determination of timber sales, including cruising and marking statistics and for growth and yield modeling of timber stands.  Verifies field data for timber cruises and timber appraisals as needed to determine the accuracy and compliance with FFS specifications.

Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed.  Assists in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation.  Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulation. 

Responsible for the care and maintenance of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.  Maintains an inventory of and purchases supplies as needed to accomplish assignments.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
