Dear Undergraduate Geography and Sustainability Majors,

We are beginning to see announcements about Summer 2021 programs that may interest you.  I have one for you below, shared by PhD student Matt Boehm.

The Mountain Lake Biological Station in Viriginia has received an NSF "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" (REU) Site Grant to offer opportunities for students across the U.S. to participate in research at the station.  Note that you will receive free room and board plus a salary for participating!  And, hands on experience working on research in the incomparable southern Appalachians.

Have a look and consider applying!  I don't have special knowledge of this REU program, but I know about REUs more generally, and I know that our students and other students who have participated in them have benefited enormously!

Sincerely,

Sally Horn

NSF-REU Program at MLBS

2021 Summer NSF-REU Program

Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Become a National Science Foundation REU.

Join undergraduates from around the country for a unique 10-week learning and living research experience in the southern Appalachians. Students conduct independent research in field ecology, evolution, behavior, and physiology under the supervision of resident scientists. REUs are internships that include all station costs, travel, and a $6,000 stipend.

MLBS is planning for a normal on-site REU program next summer. Any pandemic-related adjustments to the program will be made early in 2021.

Program dates: May 24 - July 30
Application deadline: February 20
