Good Evening Geographers and Sustainers,
Over the last several months I have been working with Alexis Andershock of the UTK Center for Career Development and Nathan McKinney on organizing our first ever UTK Geography Virtual Career Mingle. This email provides all the details for the event, how to prepare for the event, and how to get registered for the event.

What is a career mingle? Unlike a traditional job fair, you won't be the one getting interviewed. Instead, this is an opportunity to have informational interviews with a wide variety of organizations so you can learn about all the varied careers that employ geographers and sustainers. To reiterate, there is NO expectation that the organizations attending the career mingle will be hiring. If you go into the event with that expectation you will be sorely disappointed.

What is an informational interview? Great question. An informational interview gives you the opportunity to ask questions from the attendees so you can learn more about the wide variety of organizations and industries that hire geographic thinkers. Alexis Andershock has recorded a short video describing what an informational interview is and how to prepare for one at https://youtu.be/dQtZcSF_SVo. The UTK Center for Career Development has more resources to prepare at https://bit.ly/3kuq1pc.

When is the event? The virtual career mingle will be on Wednesday November 18, 2020 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm ET.

How do I get registered for the event? You will use your UTK Handshake<https://bit.ly/31N20lP> account to register for the event and sign up for one-on-one interviews and panel discussions.

How do I know what organizations will be attending the event? We have developed two interactive dashboards to help you identify those organizations you want to talk with.

  * Dashboard 1<https://arcg.is/09aPmX> | From the dashboard you can see the name of the organization attending, which sub-discipline of geography they represent (human, physical, sustainability, planning, and geospatial). You can also see the industry types of all the attendees (federal government, state government, local government, non-profits, private companies, national labs, K-12, higher ed, and utilities).
  * Dashboard 2<https://arcg.is/0COrj90> | You can use this dashboard to filter the attending organizations by industry type and geography sub-discipline

Someone in the dashboard isn't in Handshake? We are still working with some organizations to get them set up in Handshake and they will be added over the coming days. There are currently more than 50 attendees signed up and that number will likely increase as we approach the event.

When can I start signing up for panel discussions and one-on-one interviews? You can start registering on Wednesday October 28, 2020. It is in your best interest to sign up as soon as you see an organization you're interested in meeting. This event is open to all undergraduate and graduate students on campus. There will likely be students from EPS, landscape architecture, forestry, and others that will also want to meet our guests so don't wait.

One last favor. A large percentage of geography majors are not on this email listserv. Please share details of this event with your classmates and peers so they don't miss out on an opportunity set up just for them.

I have a question not addressed here. Reach out to either Alexis Andershock [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> at or Michael Camponovo at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
