The Department of Geosciences at Georgia State University is recruiting two students for fully-funded M.S. assistantships to work under the supervision of Dr. Taylor Shelton, beginning in either the Spring or Fall of 2021. One assistantship is a full-time research assistantship, while the other is split evenly between a research and teaching assistantship. Both assistantships come with a full tuition waiver and a $15,000 annual stipend for two years.

Students should be interested in working across the boundaries of critical human geography and GIS, using mapping and data visualization as a way of thinking about and challenging urban social and environmental inequalities. Students interested in working on housing inequality and/or the Atlanta metro region are especially encouraged to apply.

If you are interested in working on these (or related) topics, please email Dr. Shelton ([log in to unmask]) with your CV/resume, a brief statement describing your interests, and a sample of your written and/or cartographic work. Applicants are strongly encouraged to be in touch prior to submitting their official application. The deadline for consideration for Spring 2021 admission is November 1, while the deadline for Fall 2021 admission is April 1. Priority deadlines for consideration are October 1 and February 1, respectively.

GSU Geosciences (geosciences.gsu.edu/) is a robust department with 17 core faculty members and approximately 45 M.S. students across concentrations in Geography, Geology and Water Sciences, as well as a graduate certificate in GIS. GSU, which is located in downtown Atlanta, is the largest university in Georgia, with total enrollment exceeding 50,000 students. GSU supports one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the U.S, and we especially encourage inquiries from women and underrepresented minorities.
