Plant of the Month

July: Hesperaloe parviflora

Submitted by Carol Reese, UT Extension Western Region horticulturist

Some plants feature beautiful flowers, others have interesting foliage, and still others are known for their strong architectural form. Hesperaloe parviflora provides all three.

This plant is called a number of common names that include red yucca, coral yucca, and Texas red yucca; however, it is not a yucca at all. Other valid reasons to avoid using this plant's common names are that yellow-flowering cultivars can be found, but the best reason is that the accurate name is truly easy to pronounce. Just substitute the consonants and make it rhyme with "desperado." In fact, I suffer with the "ear worm" of the Eagles' song that goes by that name whenever I look at this plant!

What's in Bloom in Your State Botanical Garden of Tennessee?

Jackson - All the Vitex are looking great in the gardens. We are particularly fond of Bailey Nursery's new First Editions Galactic Pink™ Chaste Tree. So are the pollinators! We hope to have this available at the fall plant sale on October 1st. For more info check it out on the First Editions site<https://firsteditionsplants.com/product/galactic-pink-chastetree>.

Knoxville - Check out this fig tree beside the entrance to the kitchen garden (rock garden side). It is loaded with fruit! It's an heirloom fig from Mary Ball Washington's birthplace in Virginia, and it was brought to us as a cutting.

Crossville - You won't miss the bright color of Hydrangea arborescens 'Invincibelle Ruby' when visiting the Garden. They are perfectly placed to welcome you, along with our Garden Angel.

 Urban Agriculture Program Funds Awarded

The U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) and American Public Gardens Association (APGA) have partnered to offer immediate support to established urban agriculture and other urban food-growing programs at public gardens affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Urban Agriculture Resilience Program aims to promote resilience, grow capacity, prevent shortfalls, and gather best practices from established programs across the U.S. public gardens community.

The Helping Hands Kitchen Garden at the UT Gardens, Knoxville is one of the recipient gardens. This garden seeks to demonstrate the sustainable production of edible plants for home gardeners. The space is multi-functional, serving as a living laboratory for college students, a classroom for community education classes, and a free-to-the-public interactive display garden. Produce from the program is donated to local food banks and charity organizations. The awarded funds will be used to hire a full time temporary program assistant from July through the end of October to maintain and expand food bank donations and community education. Since the beginning of March 2020, the Helping Hands Kitchen Garden has donated a total of 123.75 lbs of produce to 5 local charities and has reached 114 individuals through our education outreach efforts.

The Tennessee spring of 2020 was cool and wet. Late spring frosts caught a few gardeners unaware. Even after air temperatures moderated, nights were chilly, and our soils did not warm significantly until late May. Gardeners eager to get warm season vegetables in the ground watched impatiently as plants sat still or gave up the ghost.

Now that soils are warm, it's time to try, try again! Many crops take only a few weeks to produce bountiful harvest, especially when daylight hours are long and bright. It's a good bet that you can be picking summer squash within 40 days of putting a seed in the ground! Be aware that supplemental watering is helpful for quick germination and may be needed for growing plants if there are long periods without adequate rain, but don't overdo it as soggy soils are not appreciated. Timely and appropriately measured side-dressings of fertilizers will boost production.
