Melissa and All,

The decision to cancel the Literature Resource Center (LRC) was a painful one, but we are required  to make significant budget cuts at this time. The LRC was purchased outright in 2007 with a combination of state funds and funds contributed by many libraries.

Since that time the Library & Archives has been paying an annual maintenance fee of $136,000 to Gale for access to the site. This access fee is only for the LRC and not for any of the other Gale products available through TEL. It is this annual fee which we are saving as part of our required budget reductions.

The LRC is not a heavily-used part of TEL, and retrievals have declined over the years. Portions of the LRC will still be available in other Gale resources on TEL, as Andrea Zielke’s message outlines.

We regret any step backward with TEL. Our hope was to add another database this year, not to remove one. But the financial situation of the state requires that we make significant budget reductions, of which this is an unfortunate casualty.

If any library or group of libraries is able to pick up the $136,000 maintenance fee and retain the database, I’m sure Gale would be more than happy to work with them.

Please let me know if you would like to discuss this or need more information.

Sincerely,

Chuck Sherrill

Andrea, are we also losing access to the part of Literature Resource Center that was a completed purchase? Libraries voluntarily pledged and contributed funds in FY 2008-2010 for perpetual access.

Good morning -

As of August 12th, the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) will no longer provide statewide access to Gale Literature Resource Center database. This includes access to Gale Literary Sources, Twayne's Authors Series and the Scribner Writer Series.  The contract for Gale Literature Resource Center was up for renewal at the end of 2020 but with declining usage and the need for immediate budget tightening, TEL is terminating the contract early.

TEL will still have literature coverage through other databases including Books and Authors, LitFinder and through journals available through Gale General OneFile, Gale Academic OneFile, Gale in Context: Middle School and Gale in Context: High School.

Thank you for your support of TEL. TEL will continue to provide access to its core research areas including academic databases, encyclopedias, test prep resources, TN records and news resources.  We are actively assessing our budget and usage to continue to provide Tennesseans with online access to the best materials.

If Gale Literature Resource Center is essential to your school, library or university, please contact your Gale sales rep or Hilary Fox at [log in to unmask].

Please let me know if you have any questions and concerns.

Thanks,

Andrea
