[External Email] Registration is now available for the July 15 Talking Freight Seminar. ******************************************************************************************************************************************** Date/Time: July 15, 2020 1:00 - 2:30 pm ET Topic: Examining the Growth of Inland Ports Registration: https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm Description and Presentations: Inland ports, which are typically intermodal rail yards that are connected by rail to coastal marine ports, have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many marine ports develop the inland facilities in coordination with Class I railroads. The facilities extend the marine ports' geographic reach, and help reduce congestion at the marine ports' primary, water-based facilities. For the railroads, the inland ports provide an opportunity to consolidate and attract long distance rail shipments and short distance truck shipments and improve their economies of scale to directly serve ports. Regional truck carriers can also benefit from the inland facilities by reducing their need to directly serve congested marine ports and by increasing the amount of intermediate length haul shipments that allow drivers to go home most nights, rather than spending days at a time on the road. Finally, states often support inland ports because they provide economic development and job opportunities in areas separate from the marine ports while also reducing congestion near those marine ports. In general, inland ports can provide significant freight transportation logistics and economic development benefits if they are appropriately located and the marine ports they serve generate sufficient volume. This webinar will review current issues and trends related to inland ports, providing various perspectives about the benefits and challenges associated with inland port operations. United States Inland Ports - Lessons Learned This presentation will provide an overview of inland port development activity that has taken place in recent years in the United States, and talk about the general pros and cons of the inland port development from location, economic development, and freight transportation perspectives. SPEAKER: * Walter Kemmsies, Jones Lang LaSalle, Trade and Logistics Global Strategist Benefits of Developing Inland Ports from a Marine Port Perspective These presentations will discuss why many marine ports have developed or are developing inland ports, and assess the benefits marine ports receive from developing those facilities.
