We are aware of the current challenges related to coronavirus (COVID-19). UT is closely monitoring the situation and the Gardens will follow UT policies and changes regarding travel, classes and events. We will post updates via social media and websites in the event of any schedule changes or adaptations. June Gardening Tip

Water your plants in the morning, to conserve water and reduce evaporation. Frequent, deep watering is better than frequent, shallow watering, since deep watering promotes deep root growth. For best results deep-water trees and shrubs once or twice a week and flowers two to three times a week. Most plants need 1 inch of rainfall per week. Pay attention to how much falls from the sky and water accordingly. If you have an automatic irrigation system, consider installing a rain sensor that adjusts for rainfall.

Plant of the Month

June: Mountain Hydrangea

Submitted by Andy Pulte, University of Tennessee Department of Plant Sciences

The mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) has always been relegated to playing second fiddle behind the more popular and lauded mophead hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). However, over the last several years at the State Botanical Gardens of Tennessee (particularly in Knoxville), we have simply fallen in love with this understated beauty. And why not? There is a lot to love about this hydrangea species you may have never heard about.

What's in Bloom in Your State Botanical Garden of Tennessee?

Crossville - I love the beautiful combination of the purple-leaved ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo') and the chartreuse spirea (Spirea thunbergii 'Ogon'). The red seed heads are an additional attribute, once the pinkish-white blooms of the ninebark have faded. These shrubs can be found at the Garden entrance next to the quilt block.

Jackson - One of the whale's tongue agaves, Agave ovatifolia, is flowering in the dry bed. The flower stalk is nearly 15' tall! For more info on whale's tongue, see our March plant of the month article<https://utianews.tennessee.edu/ut-gardens-march-2020-plant-of-the-month-whales-tongue-agave>.

Knoxville - This pinkroot (Spigelia) grabs my attention each year when it blooms, but I have never seen it looking so great! You'll find it in our shade garden; in the island bed adjacent to the lawn.

The 2020 Dazzling Dogwoods: A Garden Art Exhibit is installed throughout the Gardens and ready for viewing! This is the third year of our Art in the Gardens project and is the largest exhibit we have had, with 43 pieces created by 37 talented local artists. The Gardens remain open for visitors, and we encourage you to come see the splendid works in person. If you can't make it to the Gardens, you can view this virtual video tour of the exhibit<https://vimeo.com/426231086>. The dogwoods will remain on exhibit through the summer, and will be auctioned off later in the fall with all proceeds benefiting the UT Gardens, Knoxville. You can learn more about the exhibit here<https://ag.tennessee.edu/utg/Pages/artauction_2020dogwoods.aspx>.

As you know, we had to cancel our plant sale due to COVID-19. We were able to offer plants to members who pre-ordered in February, but we still have some left for sale. Please help to spread the word or see if there is something that might find a nice home in your own garden. You can view availability here<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oRrC58ogyCDla7Tz5VQhCrnGXpC-VV0n/view?ts=5ed96c25>. The plants are also displayed next to the office in the Garden, if you are visiting in person. Thanks for your support!

Summer Celebration Postponed

Jackson's Summer Celebration Lawn and Garden Show has been postponed until October 1, 2020. The annual gardening event, held since 1989, was previously scheduled for July 9, 2020, but will be delayed due to health and safety concerns for employees and visitors.

Fall Celebration, as it will be called in 2020, coincides with the annual Fall Plant Sale held at the West Tennessee AgResearch Center on the first Thursday of October. In addition to the plant sale, Fall Celebration will feature indoor garden talks, tours of the gardens, and AgResearch Center and cooking demonstrations from the the UT Kitchen Divas. However, outdoor garden talks, exhibitor booths and the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic will not be included in the program.

"Fall Celebration will be different from the Summer Celebration program to which our regular visitors have grown accustomed," says Bob Hayes, director of the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center. "However, considering the circumstances, we think this is the best alternative to provide horticultural education while keeping safety a top priority."

Plans for Fall Celebration are still being developed; more information about times and program agenda will be shared at a later date. Visit their website or social media pages for updates.

In May, volunteers and staff planted hundreds of native perennials for the new Monarch Waystation Garden. This garden is over 5000 square feet and features over 100 different species that attract a variety of pollinators, and most specifically, monarch butterflies. We are also implementing custom artwork from a local artist and a bike rack for greenway users. This will be the first Monarch Waystation on UT's campus and will help qualify the university as a Bee Campus USA.

Horticulture Therapy Team Springs Back!

Since early March, the UT Gardens horticultural therapy team has not been able to deliver the live activity sessions to the 15 facilities they visit. We certainly agree that closing assisted living and memory care facilities was the right thing to do, although we have missed our sweet participants!

On Friday, June 5, one of the facilities, The Villages of Farragut, arranged a way for us to visit their facility and garden safely. The Horticultural Therapy team went to work and created a great gardening experience. A fun time was had by all and each participant made a beautiful container full of summer flowers. Some went to the resident's porch and some were given to others.

We appreciate the situation our customers are in, and we are happy that some creative thinking let us bring the joy of gardening back to the Villages of Farragut! Thank you!

Several of our facilities have taken advantage of the Garden Kits the team has offered the past two months. Garden Kits are delivered to the door of the participating facility with everything needed to complete a fun, interactive gardening activity. There are two Garden Kits available for the rest of the summer. Contact Derrick Stowell<mailto:[log in to unmask]>mail or P.J. Snodgrass<mailto:[log in to unmask]> for more information.
