Good Morning Everyone!

Earlier this month, we shared with you First Lady Maria Lee’s inaugural Day of Service on May 16th.    She is now gearing up for her second annual Tennessee Kids Serve Summer Challenge!

Below is a video message from the First Lady on this year’s challenge:

Please help us spread the word and encourage more of Tennessee’s children to serve their communities and care for their neighbors this summer.

In light of Covid-19, the plans for the summer challenge have been updated to recognize the extenuating circumstances for both participating families as well as available service opportunities.  Now more than ever, it is important to find unique and meaningful ways to serve our neighbors and meet needs in our communities.

Attached to this email, you will find updated guidelines and information on this year’s challenge.  We would love for you to share this information with the rising K – rising 6th grade students in your community.  For more information on First Lady Maria Lee’s Tennessee Kids Serve Summer Challenge or to register a child for this year’s challenge, please visit: www.tn.gov/firstlady/kids.

We are hopeful that this challenge will help the participating children and their families serve and encourage those around them during this unprecedented time.  We look forward to seeing the creative ways that our youngest Tennesseans spread kindness this summer!

At the State Library & Archives, we think there are some opportunities for libraries to be involved with the challenge:

Category 1 – Your library could be a drop off point for collecting canned goods

Category 4 – Your library could be a drop off point for a clothing drive

Category 5 – Some libraries are located close to a police/fire department.  You could have a parade as part of your Summer Reading Program or storytime!  Or invite the officers over for a party (social distancing, of course)!

Category 8 – What ideas do you have for this category?  We would love to hear from you!

This will be a lot of fun and we’d like to hear your ideas!

Sincerely,

Ashley Bowers
