For those of you who may have missed the first Arkansas info session, we'll do another one this week. We'll make it Thursday afternoon so everyone can enjoy a long holiday weekend. If you would like to join us, please register here: https://bit.ly/3gMUQ7b

This will be a very informal discussion (no presentation) specific to the Arkansas location. If you have not attended one of sessions Emporia has offered with general information about the program, you may want to view this brief recording available that covers the information offered there as well as a few frequently asked questions: https://emporiastate.zoom.us/rec/share/-eh8f4rt3GlLf5HP7h7UAIkFM5rXX6a80CdLr_INzE5Vl4bOAt1CLGnQpjha77Cv?startTime=1591649220000

We know COVID-19 has created difficult times for everyone. So, please know if you are interested in this program, it is not too late to apply. Scholarship application deadlines may be firm, but we can provide some flexibility with the program application to help you get enrolled in time for fall.

Remember that Emporia's SLIM is a fully ALA accredited graduate program in library and information science. We offer both master's and doctorate degrees. For more info, please visit our website: http://emporia.edu/slim

More information about the program is in the forwarded message below. Feel free to call or e-mail if I can help answer questions and help you pursue your library degree. I hope to see many of you on Thursday!

If you are interested in more AR information but cannot join us this Thursday, please register and make a note in the comments field. Or, feel free to call or e-mail me at any time. I'll be happy to talk with you personally about your future library career plans.

Now, this highly respected program is coming to Conway, Arkansas. Emporia’s program differs from most other institutions in that it is a hybrid program. That is, while some courses are fully on-line, two courses each fall and spring semester are taught both on-line and face-to-face. Faculty from Emporia will come to Conway (in the library of Hendrix College) for two weekends, where classes will meet in person on Friday evening and all day Saturday. For this fall, those classes and dates will be:

LI 801: Foundations of Library and Information Science

September 11-12

October 9-10

LI 802: Information-Seeking Behavior and Reference Services

August 28-29

November 6-7

Not only for Arkansas students, but for many in western Tennessee and Mississippi, northern Louisiana, southern Missouri, and eastern Oklahoma and Texas, this may be the closest location that offers the benefit of face-to-face library science classes in easy driving distance.

Though orientation is normally an in-person event, due to COVID-19, for this year Arkansas orientation will be offered in via Zoom on Saturday, August 8th. Rest assured that as we approach the fall semester, ESU is monitoring current conditions for national and local pandemic guidance and working closely with partner institutions such as Hendrix. Adjustments will be made as necessary to keep students, faculty, and staff safe. Fortunately, because ESU has been working with both synchronous and asynchronous on-line course delivery for a long time, our library science courses are able to continue with minimal disruption.

In addition to in-person classes, Emporia’s program offers a number of advantages.

Specialist Concentration Programs

This fall Emporia State University will be adding a Health Information Professionals (HIP) concentration to our existing ALA-accredited MLS program. Students pursuing the HIP concentration will study current issues and information technology applications for HIP.

This new concentration will be added to our existing concentrations in Archives Studies, Informatics, Leadership and Administration, and Youth Services. Students can also earn a general MLS degree and work with an advisor to tailor their elective courses to meet their personal goals.

Small Class Size

Unlike some fully on-line programs, which may enroll as many as 200 students in a class, Emporia limits class size to thirty students. This makes it possible for faculty to provide more individual attention to students’ needs. And, it allows students more opportunities to work together in group projects and to support one another in their work with local libraries.

Conference Attendance

If you’ve always wanted to attend a national conference such as ALA, Emporia can make it possible for you to do that. As opportunities are available, students can apply for financial assistance to attend conferences and earn course credit as they do.

Networking

Emporia SLIM graduates frequently list the relationships they built while students as among the most valuable benefits of the program. Colleagues in your region around the country can provide support and insights in your current position and help keep you aware of programs, job listings, and other professional opportunities as they arise throughout your career.

Financial Aid

PLEASE NOTE THAT A NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINES ARE IN THE NEXT 3-8 WEEKS!

ESU has an excellent financial aid program, and numerous scholarship opportunities are available to help make your master’s degree here affordable. For instance, because this is a new location, Emporia is offering a $1000 scholarship for the first fifteen students to enroll in the Arkansas cohort.

Other scholarship applications are open now, as well. All first-semester graduate students at ESU are eligible to apply for a New Graduate Student Scholarship:

https://www.emporia.edu/graduate-school/admissions-costs/financial-assistance/scholarships/new-graduate-student-scholarship/

Also, the application process is now open for McNair Scholarships, a two-year scholarship of $2500 per academic year. The scholarship is guaranteed for two years provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA each semester. Applicants will be required to complete the graduate admissions application. The graduate application fee will be waived for McNair Scholars with proof of McNair Scholar status. Award recipients must be accepted to a graduate program of study and required to enroll in at least six graduate credit hours per semester. Applications and supporting materials will be due in the Graduate School office by June 26, 2020. The electronic application can be found at:

https://www.emporia.edu/graduate-school/admissions-costs/financial-assistance/scholarships/mcnair-scholarship-form/

You can learn more about ESU’s graduate school admissions requirements, costs, and financial aid here: https://www.emporia.edu/graduate-school/admissions-costs

State and regional associations and state library offices often provide additional scholarship opportunities, as well. SLIM directors will notify you of these when we become aware of them, but we recommend you join local e-mail lists and organizations to find even more.

One in particular to note: The Southeastern Library Association is accepting applications for the Ginny Frankenthaler Memorial Scholarship.

The purpose of the scholarship is to recruit beginning professional librarians who possess potential for leadership and commitment to service in libraries in the Southeastern United States. The scholarship provides financial assistance towards completion of the graduate degree in library science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded every two years. The recipient of the scholarship will be notified at the end of July, with funding to begin with the fall school term.

The deadline for the receipt of applications has been extended to July 1, 2020.
