Topic: Freight Beyond the City: Approaches to Improving Freight Mobility in the Suburban Context

Description and Presentations: Freight transportation demand has continued to increase in recent years, in many cases due to the continued growth in e-commerce, and there has been extensive examination of the impact of those increased movements in cities and other high-density areas.  However, relatively little research has examined freight transportation demand in suburban areas.  Suburban areas make up a significant percentage of many metropolitan areas’ total population, but their moderate density environment – higher than urban areas but lower than rural areas – creates different challenges for both freight carriers and government agencies that serve these areas.  Customers, both businesses and individuals, are usually more spread out than they are in more densely developed locations.  At the same time, suburban areas are often target locations for e-commerce distribution facilities, due to their proximity to urban areas, larger and cheaper amount of land available compared to nearby urban areas, and relatively easy access for labor working at those facilities compared to rural areas.  The suburban area freight transportation challenges are significant in their own right, but need to be examined and understood so freight mobility in those areas can be improved.

 

This webinar will discuss some approaches being used to address suburban freight transportation challenges.

This presentation will discuss the efforts to develop and identify freight clusters in the suburban areas around Atlanta, one of the largest freight transportations hubs in the United States.

Drone Deliveries to Reduce Suburban Freight Costs

This presentation will review how Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, also known as drones, can be used to facilitate the transport of high value shipments, such as medical supplies, in suburban areas.
