Protecting and Restoring Great Lakes Ecosystem Health

Three postgraduate research project training opportunities are available with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Great Lakes National Program Office
(GLNPO) in Chicago, Illinois. GLNPO coordinates U.S. efforts with Canada under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) to restore
and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Great Lakes Basin ecosystem. GLNPO brings together federal, state, tribal, local, and industry partners under the strategic framework of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) to accomplish
the objectives of GLRI action plan which in turn fulfills the aims of the GWQA. Research opportunities at GLNPO allow participation in many facets of planning, implementation, assessment, and reporting of Great Lakes basin monitoring, restoration, and remediation.
GLNPO seeks three participants who will each focus on one research project.

Energy Strategy Researcher

A postgraduate research opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Air and Radiation (OAR). This research opportunity
is with the Climate Protection Partnership Division (CPPD) located in Washington, DC. The selected participant will join CPPD’s State and Local Branch (SLB), whose policy experts work cooperatively with state and local governments to help them reduce emissions
in ways that meet their own unique environmental, energy and economic priorities. The participant will be involved with the development of decision-support resources and tools to support state and local government environmental policy goals.

Identifying Chemical for Low Priority Substance Designation

A postgraduate research project training opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution
Prevention (OCSPP), Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT), in the Design for the Environment Branch (DfEB) located in Washington, DC. under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may conduct research in the following areas: strengthening the
Safer Choice Standard and implementation; and, identification and analysis of additional Low Priority Substances under TSCA. The participant will have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with a small team researching and identifying safer chemicals
as part of implementation of the reauthorized Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

Utilizing EPA Data to Identify Environmental Threats

A research opportunity is currently available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 located in Chicago, Illinois. This research project will involve
analyzing environmental data submitted to the EPA, while also identifying methods to locate potential industrial facilities of concern. By identifying these industrial facilities of concern, EPA can then work with the company to potentially reduce chemical
releases to the environment, as well as, sensitive communities. This project will help fulfill EPA's mission to protect public health and the environment. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will: analyze environmental data submitted to the EPA,
as well as, contribute to the development of methods (using computer programming languages, such as, Java, database SQL, Python, R, VBA, or some other code) to locate potential industrial facilities of concern.

Water Quality, Watershed Protection and Restoration Programs

A postgraduate research opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA), Region 10, Water Division. The
appointment will be served in Seattle, Washington. This opportunity will provide the participant with exposure to a broad range of technical and policy issues
surrounding watershed protection and restoration programs. The participant will be trained in the various components of EPA's water quality and drinking water programs, observe how the programs fit together to support EPA's water quality goals and reporting
requirements, learn how EPA informs and engages with its broad range of stakeholders, and gain experience in program development and implementation. The participant may learn about watershed/wetland restoration and protection, the nonpoint source pollution
control program, impaired waterbodies, water quality standards, safe drinking water and groundwater protection, dredging and ocean disposal, wastewater and stormwater permitting and tribal relations.
