Here are 3 awesome opportunities to get some field experience with fish, mussels, bats, and birds.  The 1st 2 vacancies are summer jobs, no degree required, May-Aug.  The last one requires you have completed your BS degree.  All 3 are a great way to get in to the field of fish and wildlife biology work.

Dear Cindy Williams,

My name is Matt Wagner and I’m the non-game fish biologist with Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. I’m contacting you to in hopes you will distribute the below three paid summer job opportunities and one full-time job opportunity to your biology students. Thank you in advance!

We are seeking to fill three PAID seasonal contract technician positions at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for the summer of 2020 (Positions 1,2, & 3 below).  Additionally, we are also seeking to fill one permanent contract technician position at the museum (Position 4 below) with a minimum of a completed Bachelor of Science Degree.

If interested, please contact Matt Wagner at [log in to unmask] with a resume and cover letter by April 1, 2020 and include which position(s) you are applying for. If you have questions, please direct them to [log in to unmask]. More information on research at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science can be found at: https://www.mdwfp.com/museum/seek-study/research/.

Positions 1 & 2 – Seasonal Field Technician/Lab Technician: These positions will begin May 15th and end August 10th. Housing is not provided and all hired individuals will be based at the museum in Jackson. These positions are hourly and will be paid $13.37 per hour (not to exceed 40 hours per week). These positions will be primarily composed of field work including sampling for threatened and endangered fishes and mussels in Mississippi waters. These positions require the ability to carry 50lbs, swim, and snorkel. Much of the field work will involve wet-wading (being in the river up to shoulder depth pulling seines), boat electrofishing, and snorkel surveying. Field work will be outside in the heat and regularly consist of 10-12 hour days. These positions will require overnight trips on a semi-weekly basis with hotel and meals provided during those trips. When not in the field, these positions will process fish and mussel specimens at the museum and curate them into the collection.

Position 3 – Seasonal Lab Technician: This position will begin May 15th and end August 10th. Housing is not provided and the hired individual will be based at the museum in Jackson. This position is hourly and will be paid $13.37 per hour (not to exceed 40 hours per week). This position will primarily process bird specimens for addition to the scientific collection. Other duties may include fieldwork involving underground cave surveys for bats. The successful candidate will be trained in study skin and spread wing preparation, as well as tissue collection for incorporation into the MMNS Genetic Resources Collection.  Specific tasks will include cutting open dead birds, removing all internal tissues and organs, thoroughly cleaning the insides of the skin, stuffing the skin with cotton molds of the removed body, stitching the skin back together, and pinning the specimen to a drying board. Also, sex organs will be identified and measured, stomach contents may be collected for later analysis, and tissues will be taken for genetic studies. Required skills include the ability to patiently process often tedious tasks, which will include delicately removing thin skin from the body and stitching together and pinning out a finished specimen that will dry in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

Position 4 – Permanent Field Technician/Lab Technician: This position is full time and based at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson and requires a minimum of a completed Bachelor of Science Degree. This position is hourly and will be paid $16.41 per hour (not to exceed 40 hours per week). Housing is not provided and tentative start date is May 15th. This position will require extensive field work in various weather conditions and will regularly consist of 10-12 hour days. During field season, this position will require overnight trips on a semi-weekly basis with hotel and meals provided during those trips. This position requires the ability to carry 50lbs, swim, snorkel, and be comfortable with underground cave surveys for bats. When not in the field, this position will process specimens (fish, mussels, mammals, birds, etc.) at the museum to be curated into the collections.
