E-commerce's growth has had a significant impact on the transportation system, as it has shifted the product purchase and pickup locations from retail store "hubs" to business or residential end user "spokes". This change has dramatically increased the number of freight deliveries made by freight carriers, while at the same time significantly decreasing the size of each individual delivery shipment. Freight transportation logistics have become significantly more complex, and the increased number of deliveries directly to businesses and homes has created a growing number of challenges for both companies that produce, sell, or transport the products bought via e-commerce, and the communities that are experiencing increased transportation congestion and delivery vehicle parking challenges. Both businesses directly engaged in e-commerce activities and the municipalities where e-commerce deliveries occur are taking steps to address these challenges and avoid being overwhelmed by the continued growth of e-commerce shipments. This webinar will feature presentations focused on business and community impacts of e-commerce that were presented at the recent 2019 International Urban Freight Conference (I-NUF), which focuses on presenting research in the urban freight transportation field. Sponsored by the METRANS Transportation Center in southern California and held every other year, the conference is one of the leading urban freight transportation-focused conferences in the world. The presentations will provide different perspectives on e-commerce related issues and provide both companies and municipal officials ideas about how to address those issues. "The Distribution Networks of E-Commerce: Emergence of a Geography of City Logistics" This presentation will discuss how e-commerce related product demands are impacting distribution network logistics within communities, particularly urban areas where both the volume of deliveries and the amount of overall transportation congestion are higher. SPEAKER: * Jean-Paul Rodrigue, Hofstra University "E-Commerce Impacts on Regional Travel and Energy Use: Household Shopping and Parcel Delivery Tradeoffs" This presentation will examine how continuing increases in the percentage of residential e-commerce shipments, particularly for household goods and other small package deliveries, creates positive and negative tradeoffs from a transportation and energy use perspective relative to "conventional" brick and mortar store purchases. SPEAKER: * Monique Stinson, Argonne National Laboratory "How Do Smart Growth Cities Take on the Rocket Increase of E-Commerce? Assessing Effective Strategies for California Cities" This presentation will review what some municipalities in California are doing to deal with increased e-commerce shipments and the resulting transportation network and parking challenges associated with the higher number of freight deliveries to businesses and residences.
