 <>News Notes from Friends

E. G. AUTHOR EVENTS: A three-day literary festival celebrated authors who preserve Appalachian culture on November 1–3 at the Blount County Public Library <https://friendstnlibraries.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d01d7058d4102d7269b1aa950&id=6c0c5d92f5&e=0b323b1aef>. Named for Cormac McCarthy, who spent time in Blount County and who made a piece of public art while he was living there in 1971, the festival featured national, regional, and local authors such as Ron Rash, Sharyn McCrumb, Amy Greene, Frank X. Walker, and Lin Stepp. The event included a celebration of local history and the Blount County Public Library’s Centennial with live Appalachian arts demonstrations, musical performances, and fun activities for the whole family. Friends of the Blount County Public Library, Southland Books and Cafe, and Humanities Tennessee partnered with the Blount County Public Library to make the festival possible.

PROMOTING READING: Knoxville and Knox County are now Read City USA. The community was challenged by Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs to read for 250,000 hours, and Mayor Jacobs announced on November 1, “We did it.” He added, “But we’re not done yet. In fact, going to the moon was just the beginning. Read City USA is going on an exciting journey over the next year.” The mayor, whose office oversees the Knox County Public Library, and supporting agencies like the Great Schools Partnership and Friends of the Knox County Public Library, hope the initiatives will encourage children to learn to read well and early.

RAISING FUNDS: Friends of the McMinn County Library hosted the Book Ball on September 19 to help the E. G. Fisher Public Library replace all of its public use computers. Described by the newsletter Friends Forum, the event promised to be a fun night of music, food, and drinks as well as a contest for the best costume representing a guest’s favorite book character.

BUILDING COMMUNITY: Friends of the John P. Holt Brentwood Library report on Facebook that in the library lobby patrons put together a 18,000-piece puzzle in just over 6 months. What a great way to build a sense of community!
