Wonderful piece – thanks for pushing this out Sharon!  This is not just a large library issue but one for all of us!

At the request of ALA's Washington office—and with the permission from Motlow's admins— I submitted an Op-ed to the local paper, The Shelbyville Times-Gazette. It was published yesterday. I wanted to highlight how the embargo would affect our rural patrons. You can read it at this link. https://www.t-g.com/story/2638538.html

I encourage you all to write an op-ed or letter to the editor as well. there are a bunch of talking points as well as a sample draft on the ebooksforall.org website. I certainly used them for my piece.

Macmillan Publishers has announced a troubling new policy, limiting libraries to purchasing only one copy of each new eBook title for the first eight weeks after a book’s release. This embargo jeopardizes libraries’ ability to promote access to information for all, so the American Library Association is calling on the publisher to reverse course. We’re asking libraries and readers everywhere to join the #eBooksForAll movement and sign our petition to Macmillan CEO John Sargent.

At eBooksForAll.org, you can sign the petition and access free tools for getting the word out in your communities. Resources include:

  • Social media copy and graphics
  • Sample newsletter and e-blast copy
  • Media outreach tools such as sample op-eds and letters to the editor
  • Printable posters, table tents, and more

The response thus far has been incredible: more than 68,000 people have signed the petition already. But we know that there are countless others who agree that limiting access to new titles for libraries means limiting access for readers. As a supporter of Libraries Transform, we hope you will speak up for libraries. Please visit eBooksForAll.org and share the petition with your community to tell Macmillan that access to eBooks should not be delayed or denied. We must have #eBooksForAll!
